    • An anti-theft security arrangement for the steering column of a motor vehicle includes a clutch which is adapted to resist turning of the steering up to a certain torque but thereafter to slip to avoid damage to the parts while still making control of the vehicle impractical. The clutch is arranged on a parallel axis to the steering column and is connected to the column through a high-ratio gear train comprising a gear wheel fast with the steering column and a pinion fast with the clutch. It is engaged and disengaged by sliding the assembly of clutch and pinion into and out of mesh with the other gear wheel. The clutch includes a rotatable shaft with teeth engaging between spring steel rods so as to turn in a series of discrete jerks if the limiting torque is exceeded.

    • A steering column assembly includes a steering shaft rotatable about a longitudinal axis with a plurality of first plates fixedly mounted to the steering shaft. The first plates are spaced from each other to define a gap therebetween. A plurality of second plates are disposed about the steering shaft with at least one of the second plates disposed in each of the gaps. The plates abut each other for providing a frictional engagement therebetween to cause concurrent rotation of the steering shaft and the plates when a locking member is in an unlocked position. The locking member engages the second plates when in a locked position for preventing rotation of the second plates with the steering shaft and the first plates continuing to be impeded from rotating until the frictional engagement is overcome thereby allowing relative rotation of the steering shaft and the first plates relative to the second plates.

    • In an electric power steering device equipped with an anti-theft function, a steering shaft is surrounded by a coil inside a sensor housing of a torque sensor. A receiving portion is provided on the outer circumference of an upper shaft which is provided as a separate entity to input and output shafts that are capable of mutual elastic relative rotation. This coil is disposed between the receiving portion and an auxiliary steering power transmitting driven gear which is provided on the outer circumference of the steering shaft. The outer diameters of the receiving portion and the driven gear are larger than the inner diameter of the coil. A lock member is received by the receiving portion, whereby the rotation of the steering shaft is restricted. The sensor housing, coil, input and output shafts, a first magnetic flux transmitting member which is attached to the input shaft, a second magnetic flux transmitting member which is attached to the output shaft, and the driven gear are formed into an assembly, whereupon the upper shaft is connected to the input shaft so as to be capable of rotation in accompaniment therewith.

    • A locking mechanism for a steering column shaft in a steering column housing of a vehicle, includes a smooth bore hollow cylindrical sleeve member overlying a smooth surface steering column shaft.
