    • A method of transmission of communications from a transponder to an interrogator consists in dividing into "n" bits the information about the transponder which is to be included into an answer signal and including that information by bits into the answer signal after which the answer signal is emitted as "n" consecutive sendings, every next sending being emitted only after the receipt of confirmation from the interrogator that the preceding sending has been stored. A secondary radar system comprises in the interrogator the following elements connected in series: a coder (1) of the starting group of the interrogation signal, a transmitter (3) of the interrogation signal, a decoupling device (4) and a transceiving aerial (5), as well as, connected in series, a receiver (6) of the answer signal connected by its input to the second output of the decoupling device (4), a target selector (7), a storage block (8) and an information displaying device (9). The system further comprises in the interrogator a decoder (10) of general identification connected to the output of the receiver (6) of the answer signal and further comprises in the transponder the following elements connected in series: a transceiving aerial (17), a decoupling device (18), a receiver (19) of the interrogation signal, a decoder (20) of the starting group of the interrogation signal, an informant (21) of general identification and a transmitter (22) of the answer signal connected by its output to the second input of the decoupling device and by its second input - to the output of an informant (25) of communications which is connected by its input, through a storage block (24), to the output of the receiver (19) of the interrogation signal. The system further comprises in the interrogator a coder (2) of the read-out commands with "n" control inputs, a command unit with "n" outputs, a storage block (24) with "n" address inputs and further comprises in the transponder, a decoder (23) of the commands for read-out of bits with "n" outputs, the storage block (24) with "n" address inputs, each of them being connected to one of the "n" outputs of the decoder (23) of the read-out commands.

    • There is described an electronic interrogation and identification (I/I) system (10) in which an interrogator/reader (I/R) unit (12) operates remotely using a microwave beam (16, 70) in conjunction with one or more coded articles (30). The articles are identified by a unique method and search sequence. As the I/R unit (12) interrogates the articles (30), one or more of them respond to the I/R unit whenever a code word (data value) sent from the I/R unit matches a code word stored in one or more of the memory (54) position within the articles. After searching through all of the possible code words and word positions the I/R unit will have identified at least one code word stored in each of the word positions of at least one article. Then combinations of the just-identified code words are matched with the respective stored words of the various articles (30). After being uniquely identified each article (30) is "powered-down" on command from the I/R unit (12) and remains inactive so that one-by-one all remaining articles (30) are also identified.

    • A beacon comprises a container (1), suitably buoyant for deployment on water. An upwardly projecting cylindrical portion (3) contains a radar transponder (6) and is provided with an antenna (5) coupled to a VHF/UHF radio transmitter (7) within the container (1). The transponder (6) and transmitter (7) are coupled to a battery (8) within the container (1) via a power management system (25) and switch means (9) suitably a hydrostatic switch exposed below a waterline. On deployment and actuation of the switch means (9) the transmitter (7) transmits a signal, suitably modulated, and the transponder (6) is activated to respond to received radar signals and generate enhanced modulated radar response to give a uniformly spaced blip signal on the screen of a search radar. Deployment means comprise a cylindrical support (4, 12) extending from the beacon lower end releasably secured in a cylindrical mount (11) by a shear pin (14). Compression spring ejector means (21) act between member (10) and the support (4, 12) to eject the beacon on shear of pin (14). A latch (17) takes spring force off of the pin (14). A squib (15) within the mount (12) arranged for remote ignition serves to shear the pin (14) in emergency, release the latch (17) and allow spring (21) ejection of the beacon.
