    • A rotor coupling (1) for connecting a graphite rotor (37) to a drive shaft (12) of a rotary degassing machine comprises a cap (2) which fits over an end of the rotor and contains gripping means (3, 4) to retain the rotor in the cap. The arrangement avoids screw-threaded interconnection between the rotor and drive shaft which necessitates the forming of a screw-thread on the rotor, adds to the cost of rotor manufacture, and quickly wears with use. No, or minimal, special forming of the rotor is needed for engagement by the gripping means. A used rotor which has a worn or broken screw-thread may be held by the gripping means for the rotor to have further useful service. The gripping means preferably comprises two collet-form sleeves (3, 4) which fit one within the other inside the cap and have complementary tapered surfaces (22, 23) which co-operate upon relative axial movement of the sleeves, by means of screws or bolts (27), to cause the inner sleeve (3) to be compressed about the rotor to clamp it to the cap.

    • A process and apparatus are disclosed for recovering a non-ferrous metal, preferably aluminum and aluminum alloys, in molten coherent form from a charge of material to be processed containing the metal. The charge is introduced into a sealable furnace which is then sealed. The charge is agitated. A control parameter indicative of conditions inside said furnace is monitored and compared to a predetermined first condition for the parameter. A heat source is operated to heat the charge until the control parameter reaches the first condition. The operation of the heat source is then stopped. A controlled amount of oxidizing agent and an inert carrier is then introduced into the furnace. The control parameter is monitored and compared to a predetermined second condition for the parameter. The flow of the oxidizing agent and the carrier is controlled to maintain the control parameter at about the second condition. The molten metal is subsequently removed from the furnace.

    • A device is described for injecting gas into molten metal, e.g. molten aluminum, in a furnace chamber. It comprises: (a) a stirring apparatus having a reservoir chamber separate from the furnace chamber, a connector portion with an orifice connecting the interior of the furnace and the reservoir for the passage of the molten metal between them through the connector portion, vacuum/pressure generating means connected to the reservoir chamber interior for alternatively and successively producing therein a vacuum for drawing molten metal into its interior from the furnace chamber and a positive pressure for expelling the molten metal therefrom into the furnace chamber through the orifice in the form of a high velocity stirring jet, and (b) gas injector means adapted to inject gas into the high velocity stirring jet such that the gas is broken down into a large number of small bubbles which are circulated throughout the furnace chamber with the stirring jet.

    • A method of and apparatus for treating molten metal to achieve effective removal of such unwanted inclusions as gases, alkali metals, entrained solids, and the like. The method comprises introducing molten metal into a trough, such as the trough provided between a melting furnace and a casting machine, providing at least one mechanically movable gas injector submerged within the metal in the trough and injecting a gas into the metal in a part of the trough forming a treatment zone through the injector(s) to form gas bubbles in the metal while moving the injector(s) mechanically to minimize bubble size and maximize distribution of the gas within the metal. The injectors are preferably rotated and comprise a rotor body having a cylindrical side surface and a bottom surface, at least three openings in the side surface spaced symmetrically around the rotor body, at least one opening in the bottom surface, and at least one internal passageway for gas delivery and an internal structure for interconnecting the openings in the side surface, the openings in the bottom surface and the internal passageway. The internal structure is adapted to cause gas bubbles emanating from the internal passageway to break up into finer bubbles and to cause a metal/gas mixture to issue from the openings in the side surface in a generally horizontal and radial manner.
