    • A method of and apparatus for treating molten metal to achieve effective removal of such unwanted inclusions as gases, alkali metals, entrained solids, and the like. The method comprises introducing molten metal into a trough, such as the trough provided between a melting furnace and a casting machine, providing at least one mechanically movable gas injector submerged within the metal in the trough and injecting a gas into the metal in a part of the trough forming a treatment zone through the injector(s) to form gas bubbles in the metal while moving the injector(s) mechanically to minimize bubble size and maximize distribution of the gas within the metal. The injectors are preferably rotated and comprise a rotor body having a cylindrical side surface and a bottom surface, at least three openings in the side surface spaced symmetrically around the rotor body, at least one opening in the bottom surface, and at least one internal passageway for gas delivery and an internal structure for interconnecting the openings in the side surface, the openings in the bottom surface and the internal passageway. The internal structure is adapted to cause gas bubbles emanating from the internal passageway to break up into finer bubbles and to cause a metal/gas mixture to issue from the openings in the side surface in a generally horizontal and radial manner.

    • An aluminum alloy strip useful for can stock having a thickness of less than or equal to about 30 mm, and containing large (Mn,Fe)Al6 intermetallics as principal intermetallic particles in said strip. The intermetallic particles have an average surface size at a surface of the strip and an average bulk size in a bulk of the strip, the average surface size being greater than the average bulk size.     • The invention relates to a process of recovering a non-ferrous metal from a dross containing the same. The process involves introducing into a furnace (preferably a rotary furnace) the dross and a coalescing aid for the metal, heating the dross and fluoride compound to a treatment temperature above the melting point of the metal, using a heating device which substantially maintains a non-oxidizing atmosphere in the furnace, agitating the dross until it reaches the treatment temperature, removing the molten metal thereby separated from a solid dross residue and removing the solid dross residue from the furnace. The coalescing aid is fluoride salt or mixture that remains substantially solid at the treatment temperature, for example, cryolite, recovered cryolite, AlF3 or NaF, or a mixture thereof. The salt or mixture remains in the dross during the process and does not make the dross become sticky, thus avoiding agglomeration of the dross particles. The use of the fluoride improves the rate of recovery of the metal content of the dross without producing environmental difficulties either during the heating operation or during the disposal or use of the dross residue.

The invention also relates to the molten metal injector having a flexible tip and optionally provided with spacer elements.
