    • A device is described for injecting gas into molten metal, e.g. molten aluminum, in a furnace chamber. It comprises: (a) a stirring apparatus having a reservoir chamber separate from the furnace chamber, a connector portion with an orifice connecting the interior of the furnace and the reservoir for the passage of the molten metal between them through the connector portion, vacuum/pressure generating means connected to the reservoir chamber interior for alternatively and successively producing therein a vacuum for drawing molten metal into its interior from the furnace chamber and a positive pressure for expelling the molten metal therefrom into the furnace chamber through the orifice in the form of a high velocity stirring jet, and (b) gas injector means adapted to inject gas into the high velocity stirring jet such that the gas is broken down into a large number of small bubbles which are circulated throughout the furnace chamber with the stirring jet.

    • The invention relates to a process of decontaminating metal (especially aluminum or aluminum alloy) scrap contaminated with organic material. The problem with such methods is that undue oxidation of the metal may take place as the decontamination proceeds, leating to reduced recovery rates. The process involves heating the scrap in a fluidized bed of solid particles fluidized by a fluidizing gas to a decontaminating temperature high enough to consume the organic material but below the melting point of the metal. The heating step is carried out in the presence of a protective material which protects the aluminum or aluminum alloy against substantial oxidation while the scrap is held in the bed at the decontaminating temperature. Preferred protective materials include organic and inorganic fluorine-containing compounds, particularly AlF3. The process is particularly effective for the treatment of aluminum alloys containing magnesium, which are especially susceptible to oxidation. Scrap decontaminated in this way can be subjected to conventional metal recovery processes, e.g. metal melting, and provide high recovery rates of the metal. The process of the invention can also be used for protecting metal (particularly aluminum and alloys thereof) against excessive oxidation during heat treatments other than decontamination. The invention also relates to the treatment of briquettes of compacted scrap without the need for protection from oxidation and without the need for prior shredding or grinding.

    • An aluminum alloy strip useful for can stock having a thickness of less than or equal to about 30 mm, and containing large (Mn,Fe)Al6 intermetallics as principal intermetallic particles in said strip. The intermetallic particles have an average surface size at a surface of the strip and an average bulk size in a bulk of the strip, the average surface size being greater than the average bulk size. The strip article may be produced by supplying a molten aluminum alloy having a composition consisting, in addition to aluminum, essentially by weight of: Si between 0.05 and 0.15 %; Fe between 0.3 and 0.6 %; Mn between 0.6 and 1.2 %; Mg between 1.1 and 1.8 %; Cu between 0.2 and 0.6 %; and other elements: less than or equal to 0.05 % each element with a maximum of 0.2 % for the total of other elements; and casting the molten alloy in a continuous caster having opposed moving mould surfaces to an as-cast thickness of less than or equal to 30 mm.     • The invention relates to a process of recovering a non-ferrous metal from a dross containing the same. The process involves introducing into a furnace (preferably a rotary furnace) the dross and a coalescing aid for the metal, heating the dross and fluoride compound to a treatment temperature above the melting point of the metal, using a heating device which substantially maintains a non-oxidizing atmosphere in the furnace, agitating the dross until it reaches the treatment temperature, removing the molten metal thereby separated from a solid dross residue and removing the solid dross residue from the furnace. The coalescing aid is fluoride salt or mixture that remains substantially solid at the treatment temperature, for example, cryolite, recovered cryolite, AlF3 or NaF, or a mixture thereof. The salt or mixture remains in the dross during the process and does not make the dross become sticky, thus avoiding agglomeration of the dross particles. The use of the fluoride improves the rate of recovery of the metal content of the dross without producing environmental difficulties either during the heating operation or during the disposal or use of the dross residue.

The invention also relates to the molten metal injector having a flexible tip and optionally provided with spacer elements.
