    • A sandwich skin construction (10) that is comprised of an internal structure (16) comprising a plurality of cones (12) disposed between two outer skins (14a) is disclosed. The interior contains a pressurized gas to give the resulting sandwich skin construction (10) added strength over a similarly constructed non-pressurized structure of the same material with an equivalent mass. Various attributes of the cones (12) can be adjusted, for example, size and angle, to optimize the performance of the sandwich skin construction (10) to a variety of external stresses. Moreover, a method is provided for manufacturing the sandwich skin construction (10). The structure can be placed in a pressurized environment before attaching the outer skins (14a).

    • A liner (30) for a shaped charge (10) has a hemispherical apex and a skirt portion (38) which terminates in a circular skirt edge (40) having a skirt edge diameter (D). The apex (36) has a radius of curvature which is less than the skirt edge diameter (D) and the thickness (Tac) of the liner at the center of the apex (36) is greater than the thickness (Ts) of the liner at the skirt edge (40), with the thickness tapering between the apex and the skirt edge in a smooth, curvilinear transition. The liner (30) may be employed in a shaped charge (10) which includes a shaped explosive (26) which has been compressed to at least 95 % of its theoretical maximum density and is contained in a housing (12) and cover (20) made of a pulverable material such as a ceramic. A chamber (22) is provided in the base of the housing (12) to receive a pre-compressed initiation pellet (24) and the housing has a slot (42) formed in its base (14) to receive and retain therein a linear explosive member in close proximity to the inititation pellet (24) retained within the chamber.

    • An improved composite for absorbing and dispersing impacting forces is disclosed. The composite (10) includes a flexible plastic enclosure (12, 14) defining an internal cavity (15). The flexible enclosure is generally impermeable to air and capable of having its internal pressure changed. The composite further includes a foam core (11) filling the cavity and retained within the cavity and adhered on substantially all of its external surface to the internal surface of the cavity. The cavity can be pressurized by valve (16) for higher impact absorbance. Methods for fabricating the composites are disclosed, as well. These methods include forming the outer enclosure by applying a solution/suspension of the prepolymer of controlled solids content to the core and also can include the step of preheating the core prior to coating it.
