A device for providing a three-dimensional PIP image according to one embodiment of the present invention comprises: an image acquisition unit for acquiring a main three-dimensional image and a two-dimensional or three-dimensional PIP image from a broadcast signal, external device, or recording medium; a PIP-combining unit for combining the main image and the PIP image; and a three-dimensional formatter for formatting the combined image of the main image and the PIP image into a format that can be stereoscopically displayed. Accordingly, an image may be provided with a main three-dimensional image and a two-dimensional PIP image or a main three-dimensional image and a three-dimensional PIP image which are overlaid.

摘要： A drive method and apparatus is provided for a 2D/3D autostereoscopic display with a switchable lens array having an electrically switchable reflractive index , between an array of row electrode lines and an array of column electrode lines to control the switching of the lens elements. The drive signals comprise: a row select voltage waveform (Rsw) ,- a column select voltage waveform (Csw) ,-and a common row and column de-select voltage waveform (Vbase) . The weveforms each comprise a substantially square wave voltage waveform, each waveform aving the same periode. The three waveforms are time staggered with respect to each other with a phase shift of 2 /3 or 4 /3 between each waveform and each other waveform. This arrangement provides polarity inversion voltage waveforms when switching voltages are applied to the lens elements, and with maximised RMS voltage.

The light direction switching apparatus comprises a passive birefringent lens (138), e.g. a birefringent lenticular screen, and a switchable polariser (146). By switching the polariser (146), different directional distributions of output light are provided. The light direction switching apparatus may be used with or incorporated in a display device, such as a liquid crystal display device, to provide a display device switchable between a two dimensional mode and an autostereoscopic three dimensional mode, or to provide a multi-user display device where different images are displayed to different viewers. The light direction switching apparatus may also be used to provide switchable brightness enhancement of reflective or transflective display devices. The light direction switching apparatus may also be used to provide a fibre-optic switching apparatus. The switchable polariser may be mechanically switchable or electrically switchable.

摘要： The present invention relates to a compact display apparatus providing similarly sized but much brighter virtual 3D images to a viewer, the apparatus comprising an enclosure; LED illumination based electronic display device; partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface; and contrast/interference filter screen. The enclosure houses the LED illumination based electronic display device, filter screen and the partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface. The filter screen is positioned close to the surface of the LED illumination based electronic display device. The LED illumination based electronic display device projects a primary real image onto the filter screen and is optically transmitted onto the partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface. The partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface reflects a secondary virtual 3D image perceivable on the opposite side of the partially transparent and partially reflective viewing surface to the LED illumination based electronic display device.
