    • An assembly for transferring information to and/or from flexible sheet media in a highly advantageous curved configuration is disclosed. The sheet material includes a length and a width defining first and second opposing surfaces. The assembly includes support means for supporting the sheet the curved configuration across its width, having the first surface inwardly oriented with respect to the curved configuration. Thereafter, moving means moves the flexible sheet material so supported in a direction along a read/write path generally parallel to the sheet material length and transverse to the direction of curvature. A read/write arrangement is provided which is configured for reading and/or writing information across the width of the first surface of the sheet as the sheet is moved along the path in the curved configuration. In one feature, means is provided for rotationally moving the read/write arrangement in a predetermined way in the housing such that the read/write arrangement is in a confronting relationship with the first, inwardly oriented surface and cooperates with the movement provided by the sheet material moving means so as to cause the read/write arrangement to sequentially read information from and/or write information to the inwardly oriented, first surface of the sheet as the read/write arrangement traverses the width of the flexible sheet material while the latter is on the read/write path in the curved configuration. In another feature, a read and/or write operation may be performed on the second, outwardly oriented surface of the sheet material.

    • The invention relates to a light beam deflector consisting of a light source (1), a first polarisation converter (7) and a rotary deflecting unit (4). The deflecting unit (4) has a second polarisation converter (8), a polarizing beam splitter (9), a third polarisation converter (10) and a reflector (11). The polarisation converter (7) changes the polarisation of the light beam (2) into a circular type and converts the circular direction of rotation depending on a control signal. The polarization converter (8) changes the circular polarisation of the light beam (2) depending on the circular direction of rotation into a linear type with two polarisation states. Depending on the polarisation state, the light beam (2) is reflected at the polarizing beam splitter (9) as a first output beam (19) or a second one (20) rotated through 180 DEG . At each revolution of the deflecting unit (4) a working range can be established by the control signal in which only one of the output beams is switched on. The one which is switched on has the full light output of the light beam (2), thus achieving both high optical efficiency and a high yield.

    • An internal drum recorder (10 and 350) images a media (68 and 363a) to a radiation pattern using an image array (288 and 361), which extends along a primary track, such as a helical track, and in a direction essentially perpendicular to the primary track. In one embodiment, the source of radiation is a laser (52) aimed along the longitudinal axis (58 and 369) of the drum (62 and 360), deflected and applied through a light modifier (78) within a spinner (70). The light modifier (78) is a device breaking the signal laser beam into a number of sub-beams. Alternately, a number of laser diodes (362) rotating within a tranlatable spinner (352) may be used to produce the image. A gripper bar (200) rotating about the longitudinal axis of the drum (62 and 360) facilitates introducing and removing new sheets into the drum (62 and 360). A focus detector (284, 286, 292, 294, 296 and 434, 436, 440, 442) rotating within the spinner (70 and 352) is used to correct the radial distance to the media (68 and 363a) surface from the spinner (70 and 352).
