    • A modulator loop (700) designed to operate in a frequency range of interest is described. The loop (704) includes a loop output terminal and a switching stage, the output of which is coupled to the loop output terminal. The switching stage (704) has a first delay associated therewith. The output of a modulator stage is coupled to the input of the switching stage. A first feedback path is coupled between the loop output terminal and the feedback input of the modulator stage. A feedback filter is coupled between the output of the modulator stage and the feedback input of the modulator stage which compensates for the first delay. The feedback filter (708) is operable to transmit frequencies outside the frequency range of interest and attenuate frequencies in the frequency range of interest.

    • An amplifier circuit includes a power amplifier biased for saturated mode operation, and a controllable current source to provide supply current to the power amplifier. The controllable current source effects desired amplitude modulation of the output signal from the power amplifier by modulating the supply current it provides responsive to an amplitude information signal. In one or more embodiments, the current source includes a circuit that is configured to adjust one or more transmitter operating parameters responsive to detecting changes in the effective DC resistance of the power amplifier. For example, the circuit may generate a compensation signal that reduces the effective DC resistance responsive to detecting that the effective DC resistance has undesirably increased. By way of non-limiting examples, such compensation may be effected by changing a current mirror, an amplifier-to-antenna impedance matching, an amplifier bias or device size, or imposing some form of transmit signal back-off.

    • Unwanted transmitter modulation which would otherwise have an undesirable impact at a radio receiving the transmitted signal is detected and cancelled. The radio transmitter includes a phase-locked loop that receives an input signal and a feedback signal. An amplifier stage amplifies an output from the phase-locked loop, and an antenna transmits the amplified signal. A detector detects the transmitted signal and generates the feedback signal. Inclusion of the amplifier stage in the phase-locked loop compensates for undesirable transmitter modulation introduced at the amplifier stage. One example application of the present invention is to vehicular-based radio systems, where the radio transmitter is susceptible to the noise generated by the vehicle electrical system which ultimately results in an audible whine at the radio receiver. The whine heard at the receiver is greatly reduced/eliminated.

    • The invention includes apparatus for processing an input signal to generate an output signal. The processing arrangement comprises first and second feedback loops for generating, from said input signal, respective output signal components. Each loop comprises a voltage controlled oscillator, having a frequency or phase which is variable in response to a control signal, for generating a loop output signal which forms one of the components of the output signal and a comparator for generating the control signal. There is also provided combining means for combining the loop output signals to derive a signal representative of the output signal. Means for providing first and second feedback loop operating signals, dependent on the output signal and in phase quadrature with one another are provided. In each loop, the feedback loop operating signal is applied to one input of the comparator and the other input of the comparator is coupled to receive a component of the input signal. Signal-stability means for continuously ensuring that the output signal is stable whatever the phase of the output signal relative to the input signal are provided.
