摘要： This disclosure describes a low-power, low-phase-noise (LPLPN) oscillator. The LPLPN oscillator (100) includes a resonator load (102), an amplifier stage (104), and a loop gain control circuit (106). The resonator load (102) is structured to resonate at a primary resonant frequency. The amplifier stage (104) is coupled with the resonator load (102) to develop a loop gain that peaks at the primary resonant frequency. The loop gain control circuit (106) is coupled with the amplifier stage (104), and it is structured to regulate the loop gain for facilitating the amplifier stage (104) to generate an oscillation signal at the primary resonant frequency and suppress a noise signal at a parasitic parallel resonant frequency (PPRF).

摘要： Low phase noise radio frequency (RF) sources generated by voltage controlled oscillators (VCOs) are described. Optical modulators driven by a VCO may be used to generate optical side-bands to cw lasers. The spectral extent of said side-bands can be increased via frequency broadening in highly nonlinear waveguides. Free running mode locked low phase noise comb oscillators can be used as reference oscillators to generate beat signals between those side-bands and individual comb modes at distal spectral regions, thereby creating an error signal used to reduce the phase noise of VCOs and the generation of low phase noise RF signals. VCO phase noise may be reduced by using free-running modelocked comb lasers phase locked to external frequency references, by omitting a reference comb and using a nonlinear interferometer for generating an error signal, or by locking a slave comb to the modulation frequency of an intra-cavity modulator driven by the VCO.

摘要： A two-walled coupled inductor includes an outer wall and an inner wall separated by a slit. The outer wall has a first width and the inner wall has a second width. The inner wall and the outer wall may be configured to be coupled to oscillator circuitry. The two-walled coupled inductor may include an electrically conductive stub coupled to the outer wall to be coupled to a power supply. A common mode current flows through the outer wall, and the stub if one is present, and a differential mode current flows through both the outer wall and the inner wall, but not the stub. The first and second widths, and dimensions of the stub, may be sized to increase an inductance of the common mode compared to an inductance of the differential mode, thereby reducing phase noise of the inductor-based resonator.

摘要： In aspects of a low phase noise technique for use with a crystal oscillator, a bias control circuit sets a bias voltage on the gate of a first transistor needed to sink or source an amount of current corresponding to a sensed common mode signal. The sensed common mode signal is sensed with a common mode sense circuit that is coupled across two ports of the crystal oscillator, and current is provided by a current source. The bias voltage is set by a bias controller that uses a second transistor coupled to the common mode sense circuit and the first transistor.

In one embodiment, a circuit comprises a VCO, first and second transistors, and first and second capacitive attenuators. The first and second transistors are cross coupled through the attenuators. In a first mode, the first and second transistors are turned off, and the capacitive attenuators attenuate a signal on output terminals of the VCO at control inputs of the first and second transistors. 摘要： Certain aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs) using a lowered or an adjustable negative transconductance ( -g m ) compared to conventional VCOs. This -g m degeneration technique suppresses the noise injected into an inductor-capacitor (LC) tank of the VCO, thereby providing lower signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for a given VCO voltage swing, lower power consumption, and decreased phase noise. One example VCO generally includes a resonant tank circuit, an active negative transconductance circuit connected with the resonant tank circuit, and a bias current circuit for sourcing or sinking a bias current through the resonant tank circuit and the active negative transconductance circuit to generate an oscillating signal. The active negative transconductance circuit includes cross-coupled transistors and an impedance connected between the cross-coupled transistors and a reference voltage.
