    • A virtual edge of magnetic tape (22) is located by successively moving a head unit (28) toward a physical edge (22EB) of tape and, at each of a plurality of transverse locations, recording a pattern P of digital information. By either successive read-back or rewind followed by reading, sensing of a read-back or acquisition signal is attempted at each location. In connection with the reading operation, a pattern is acquired from the acquisition signal using a method of amplitude invariant data recovery such as peak detection, the pattern acquired being invariant regardless of any overall amplitude envelope variations. A virtual edge of tape is determined when an acquired pattern derived from the acquisition signal does not match a predetermined pattern of information which was recorded as a corresponding pattern of flux directional transitions.

    • A method of positioning the read/write head onto a desired data track (344) in a multi-track record/player utilizes a plurality of registration stripes (381, 382, 383) to find the central axis of a data track. In one embodiment, each registration stripe has associated with it a recorded identification pattern or tone which may be sensed and used for identification purposes. Then, based upon the read amplitude output of the read head (103), the appropriate edge of a registration stripe (382) is detected and, from there, the read/write head (103) is moved directly onto the desired data track without any subsequent open loop movement. In an alternative embodiment, multiple edges are sensed and used in a calculation to determine the lateral displacement associated with the longitudinal centerline of a desired data track.

    • A track control method for a data cartridge tape drive which includes a multichannel head assembly, a positioner for controllably positioning the multichannel head assembly transversely to a transport path for a tape driven by the drive, and drive electronics responsive to a carrier servo signal. The track control method initializes the data cartridge tape drive by operating the positioner to move the head assembly to a preselected transverse position. Next, the tape is moved along the transport path and the positioner is moved to substantially minimize a feedback signal derived from the carrier servo signal. The head assembly is stepped a first predetermined number os steps in a first transverse direction until the carrier servo signal is not detected. If the carrier servo signal is not detected, then the positioner is stepped so as to move the head assembly a second predetermined number of steps in a second transverse direction to locate a reference track.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for positioning a head (34) relative to a plurality of tracks (T1, Tn) running parallel to each other in their longitudinal direction on a record carrier (1). First and second tracks (T1, T2) have first and second tracking signals (S1, S2) of specific frequencies recorded in them and third and fourth tracks (Tn-1, Tn) have third and fourth tracking signals (Sn-1, Sn) of specific frequencies recorded in them. The apparatus comprises a head (34) for reading the tracking signals, control signal generator means (36, 38) for generating a first control signal in response to the first and second tracking signals (S1, S2) and for generating a second control signal in response to the third and fourth tracking signals (Sn-1, Sn). A positioning unit (40, 42) for moving the head (34) in a direction transverse to said longitudinal direction, has an input for receiving said first and second control signals and for moving the head in response to said first and second control signals, so as to position the head (34) onto a fifth and sixth track (Ta, Tz) respectively. A position detection unit (48, 49, 56) for detecting the position of the head (34) in said transverse direction, has an output (58) for supplying a first and a second position signal when the head (34) is positioned onto said fifth and sixth track (Ta, Tz) respectively. In a calibration mode of operation the position of the fifth and sixth tracks are located and the generated first and second position signals are stored in a memory (60).
