    • The present invention relates to a disk drive seek control system which is capable of rapidly moving a transducer (18) from an initial position to a target position above a data storage medium (12). The system applies control to an actuator motor means (20) based on projected transducer velocity at a future servo sample time. This allows the system to significantly reduce transducer velocity profile. In addition, the system utilizes dynamically adapted feed forward deceleration current during a deceleration portion of the seek cycle to further reduce velocity errors during the seek cycle, the system significantly reduces the length of time required for settling the transducer (18) on the track (14) of the disk (12) after the seek cycle has ended.

    • A single mechanism is used to launch and retract the read-write heads from the medium of a disk drive. The mechanism includes a retraction lever (91), a retraction lever lock (118), a mechanical biasing member (76), a disk (37), and a voice coil motor (16). During launch of the read-write heads, the mechanical biasing member balances the emf generated by the voice coil motor. After launch, the voice coil motor is used to rotate a retraction lever and increase the potential energy in the mechanical biasing member. The retraction lever lock then is used to store this built-up potential energy. If the drive later experiences a loss of power, the mechanism automatically retracts the read-write heads from the media. During retraction of the read-write heads, the stored mechanical energy is applied to the retraction lever, which then automatically retracts the read-write heads.

The novel dual actuator latch apparatus is amenable for installation in standard form factor DASDs, and is particularly well-suited for incorporation in small and very small form factor DASDs.

    • A head loading mechanism (10) for a removable cartridge disk drive comprises a support base (32) fixedly mounted in the drive, and a movable member (12) movably attached to the support base (32) via a pair of elongate flexures (28, 30). The movable member (12) has a ramped surface (14a, 14b, 16a, 16b) adapted to engage a suspension arm (52, 54) at the distal end of an actuator (41). A read/write head (56, 58) is mounted on the suspension arm (52, 54). The movable member (12) moves upon the flexures (28, 30) in tandem with the actuator (41) as it moves toward and away from the edge of a disk (62, 64) in the drive. The movable member (12) carries the suspension arm (52, 54) of the actuator (41) to the edge of the disk (62, 64), at which point the suspension arm (52, 54) can ride up and down the ramped surface (14a, 14b, 16a, 16b) of the movable member (12) in order to load the read/write head (56, 58) onto the surface of the disk (62, 64) and then subsequently unload the read/write head (56, 58).

    • A method of positioning the read/write head onto a desired data track (344) in a multi-track record/player utilizes a plurality of registration stripes (381, 382, 383) to find the central axis of a data track. In one embodiment, each registration stripe has associated with it a recorded identification pattern or tone which may be sensed and used for identification purposes. Then, based upon the read amplitude output of the read head (103), the appropriate edge of a registration stripe (382) is detected and, from there, the read/write head (103) is moved directly onto the desired data track without any subsequent open loop movement. In an alternative embodiment, multiple edges are sensed and used in a calculation to determine the lateral displacement associated with the longitudinal centerline of a desired data track.

    • A carriage retention device for use in a head disk assembly of a disk drive which reads or writes data to or from a disk with a head. The disk has a landing area where the head rests when not in use. The carriage supports the head and positions it relative to the disk. The carriage is movable to position the head over the data tracks of the disk and in the head landing area. A coil mounted on the carriage is used in conjunction with a stationary magnet assembly adjacent to the coil to electromagnetically position the carriage. The magnet assembly produces a non-uniform magnetic field having a region with a low gradient of flux density and a region with a higher gradient of flux density. A ferrous metal body, such as a steel ball, is mounted on the carriage so that it is positioned within the region with the low gradient of flux density when the carriage positions the head over the data track of the disk and within the region with the higher gradient of flux density when the head carriage positions the landing area. The magnet assembly exerts force on the ferrous metal body sufficient to move the carriage toward the parked position when no current flows in the coil and to hold the carriage in the parked position during spin up or when the head disk assembly is being moved.
