    • A crossover sub (200) includes a tubular housing connected to a drill string (202) in a wellbore (204), a sealing structure to seal against a wellbore wall (232), and a sleeve valve (234) disposed within the housing and movable between a closed position and an open position in response to a fluid pressure in a first flow chamber (212) or second (214), separate flow chamber of the housing. The first flow chamber fluidly connects an upper annulus (216) of the wellbore to a central bore (218) of the drill string downhole of the crossover sub. The second flow chamber fluidly connects a central bore of the drill string uphole (222) of the sealing structure to a lower annulus (222) of the wellbore. The sleeve valve (234) closes the second flow chamber (212) in response to the sleeve valve being in the closed position, and opens the second flow chamber (214) in response to the sleeve valve being in the open position.

    • A tool is provided for use in closing and sealing the cased bore of a well to be abandoned. The tool is run into the bore, the tool having a stack of pleated rings slidably mounted on a tubular mandrel. The tool is engaged with the casing and a charge of hot asphaltic sealant is discharged from a conveyed container to flood the stack and tool annulus. The stack is compressed axially to partly flatten and radially expand the rings to frictionally engage the surrounding casing, the rings and sealant sealing the bore. Further, the rings can expand the heated casing for sealing casing/cement interfaces. The sealant solidifies and creates an impermeable mass sealing against surfaces of the mandrel, stack and casing.

    • A retrievable packer has its sealing system unloaded before the slip system is relaxed by separation of slip cones from slips that flank the seal assembly. The mandrel is cut so that the portion above the cut can be raised to take a cone up and away from collet heads which previously were trapped by the cone. The collet heads are disposed between opposed sloping surfaces so that the retraction of the cone from under the heads allows the residual rubber pressure to force the heads toward the mandrel into the space created by relative movement of the mandrel that took the wedge cone uphole. The heads are at ends of fingers having a radially inward bias to further assist retraction of the heads toward the mandrel. With the heads retracted the sealing element stretches out before slip cones are moved relative to the slips.
