    • A sail with a seamless body is produced by transporting a flexible carrier over a segmented support through a series of stations in which a coating of liquid synthetic resin is deposited on the carrier in a predetermined pattern conforming substantially to the desired configuration for the sail and the segments of the support are moved to the carrier and coating into the predetermined contour for the transverse portion of the sail disposed thereon concurrently with passage of said carrier thereover. Structural yarns are deposited in the coating in a predetermined pattern, and additional liquid synthetic resin to a desired depth for the coating corresponding substantially to the desired thickness for the sail and to encapsulate the structural yarns. The resin on said carrier is cured to produce a composite sail structure having the desired configuration and contours with structural yarns being embedded in the cured resin. The composite sail structure si removed from the carrier and trimmed, following which finishing operations are performed thereon.

    • An adjustable mold (10) includes a distortable boundary (22), a flexible membrane (18), and a pressurizer, and method of use thereof. Pressure is applied to the flexible membrane which causes the membrane to distort over the boundary. The shape of the boundary and the distortion of the flexible membrane control the optical characteristics of a lens resulting from the application and curing of a molding composition (100) placed on the flexible membrane or to cast other items having variable shapes determined in part by the flexible membrane. In addition a mold edge (90) is used to allow casting in predetermined shapes, reducing need for grinding or edging. Visual (74) and emission device (80) calibration features used in conjunction with calibration reference images (77) allow uniform selective distortion of the flexible membrane.

    • The present application relates to a reliable and inexpensive method for manufacturing a vacuum-tight envelope for a vacuum solar thermal panel, said vacuum-tight envelope being defined by a glass front plate (1) transparent to solar radiation, a metal bottom plate (2), a peripheral frame (3) joined to the metal bottom plate (2), and a peripheral belt (4) connecting said peripheral frame (3) to the glass front plate (1); said method comprising the following steps: - joining edge to edge a first metal strip to a second metal strip in order to form a bi-metal strip, and then joining together the opposite ends of said bi-metal strip in order to form a closed loop; - after said joining step, forming said first metal strip into the peripheral frame (3) and said second metal strip into the peripheral belt (3); - after said joining and forming steps, sealing the free edge of the peripheral belt (4) to the glass front plate (1); - after said joining and forming steps, joining the metal bottom plate (2) to the peripheral frame (3).
