    • An ultrafiltration device is designed to be used for ambulatory SCUF or other types of continuous or intermittent ultrafiltration, typically while being worn or otherwise carried by the subject (S) that is being treated. The ambulatory ultrafiltration device comprises a blood filter (4) that has a blood side (6) for fluid communication with the vascular system of the subject (S), an ultrafiltrate side (7), and a semipermeable membrane (8) disposed between the blood side (6) and the ultrafiltrate side (7). The ambulatory ultrafiltration also comprises a buffer vessel (3) in fluid communication with the blood side (6) of the blood filter (4), and a blood pump (9). The blood pump (9) is controlled to alternate between a withdrawal phase and a return phase. In the withdrawal phase, blood is withdrawn on a blood path from the subject (S) via the blood filter (4) to the buffer vessel (3). In the return phase, blood is returned from the buffer vessel (3) to the subject (S) on the blood path. The blood filter (4) is arranged to remove ultrafiltrate from the blood during at least one of the withdrawal and return phases. The use of a single blood path for withdrawal of blood and return of treated blood makes the device suitable for ambulatory ultrafiltration.

    • The invention relates to a device and a method for blood treatment in a single-needle operating mode. The blood treatment device has an extracorporeal blood circuit (1) comprising a blood supply line (8) leading to the inlet of a blood treatment unit (2) and a blood return line (8) leading away from the outlet of the blood treatment unit. Blood collecting means, for example a blood collecting container, are provided in the blood return line, said means being connected to means (18) for storing gas, for example an air reservoir, by a flow line. The flow connection comprises two line branches, one branch being used to transfer gas from the air reservoir into the blood collecting container and the other branch being used to transfer gas from the blood collecting container into the air reservoir. The connection branch for transferring gas from the air store into the blood collecting container contains means (20) for compressing air, for example a compressor. The device according to the invention is operated in such a way that the filling level of the means for collecting blood can be determined as precisely as possible.

    • Methods and apparatus particularly involving the separation of blood into blood components and the collection of such components are disclosed. In one aspect, an extracorporeal method for the collection of plasma and red blood cells is provided, wherein the collection of plasma and red blood cells may occur simultaneously or subsequently utilizing the same dual stage blood processing vessel. The flow of blood to the blood processing vessel and return of uncollected blood components may be provided via a single needle, wherein blood is removed from and returned to a donor/patient during alternating blood removal and blood return submodes. Platelet separation and collection options are also described. In either case, prior to red blood cell collection, a set-up phase may be carried out to set a predetermined hematocrit and AC ratio. Replacement fluid delivery may optionally also be provided either substantially continuously during any collection phase(s) and/or in a bolus mode.
