摘要： A modular implant system includes a set of anatomically-designed diaphyseal fitting and filling modular implant components and adapters for connection to another implant component such as a modular articular component, a segmental component or an intercalary component. The other end of each diaphyseal component is a tapered porous surface. The tapered porous surface is received with a tapered bore in the bone diaphysis that is prepared to match the size and shape of the tapered porous surface. The diaphyseal implant is easy to insert and remove, does not bind before fully seating, and is designed to prevent stress shielding. The diaphyseal sleeve eliminates the long lever arm created when fixation occurs only at the tip of the stem, and should therefore eliminate related stem loosening.

摘要： A modular implant system allows a surgeon to secure an implant assembly to thee diaphysis of a long bone. The system includes a set of anatomically-designed diaphyseal fitting modular implant components. One end of each diaphyseal implant component is a Morse taper post for connection to another implant component such as a modular articular component, a segmental component or an intercalary component. The other end of each diaphyseal component is a tapered porous surface. In some sizes, the tapered porous surface includes a plurality of steps. The tapered porous surface is received with a tapered bore in the bone diaphysis that is prepared to match the size and shape of the tapered porous surface. The diaphyseal implant is easy to insert and remove, does not bind before fully seating, is designed to prevent stress shielding and provides the surgeon with a host of stem options with its modularity.

摘要： A multipiece trial femoral component kit (16) for use in sizing a femoral cavity prior to implantation of a prosthetic femoral implant. The trial femoral component kit (16) has at least two distal trial components (12', 12") of different size and two proximal trial components (14', 14") of different size and mating elements (34', 36') which allow the proximal and distal components to be releasably coupled to form a femoral trial prosthesis (10). The distal trial component combines with the proximal trial component to form the stem of the femoral trial prosthesis, the joint of the two components located in the circumferential area (54) between the gluteal tuberosity (46) and about 2" below the pectineal line (48) of the femur (40) when the femoral trial is inserted within the femur (40). The distal and proximal components may further include means for selectively combining the proximal and distal components to form a femoral trial prosthesis that corresponds to an available prosthetic femoral implant. The dimensions of the distal and proximal components may be undersized when compared to the corresponding regions of the prosthetic femoral implant.

摘要： A modular femoral stem section (10) includes a proximal section (12) and a distal section (14). A locking screw (30) extends through the proximal section and into the distal section to secure the sections together. A plurality of securing screws (64) or pegs (74) secure an acetabular cup shell (60) to the pelvic bone. The locking screws and securing screws or pegs are made of a shape memory alloy (SMA). The screws or pegs are deformed when below a first predetermined temperature and are disposed to secure the proximal and distal sections together or to secure the cup shell to the pelvic bone while in the deformed state. Thereafter, the screws or pegs are heated above a second predetermined temperature to undergo a constrained recovery. In further embodiments, the prosthesis may include additional elements made of SMA which are shrunk fitted in place on the prosthesis.
