    • A method and catheter system for irradiating a body lumen wall which comprises providing an elongated, flexible radiation transmission member having an emitting portion at its distal end, advancing the emitting portion to an area adjacent the wall defining the patient's body lumen to be treated by irradiation, and directing radiation through the transmission member while moving the transmission member to cause the emitting portion to irradiate a length of the wall of the body lumen. The transmission member may be rotated independently or in conjunction with longitudinal movement to achieve either selective or uniform irradiation of the wall defining the body lumen. In one embodiment, this invention comprises an elongated flexible shaft, having an inflatable member disposed at the distal end. A radiation transmission member having an emitting portion on its distal end is slidably disposed within the elongated shaft so that the emitting portion resides within the inflatable member. The system is configured so that the emitting portion may travel at least along the length of the inflatable member by longitudinally moving the transmission member. Optionally, the emitting portion may be configured to transmit radiation in a particular radial direction and the transmission member may be configured to rotate axially within the lumen.

    • A method for treating dermatological organ disorders and skin lesions in a mammal through the use of directed, pulsed laser light is described. The dermatological disorders are characterized by an increase in concentration of potential photodynamic chemical compounds like carotenoid compounds, and especially the carotenoid beta-carotene, compared to normal skin. Pulsed dye laser light of a time and duration specific for maximal absorption by a carotenoid compound like beta-carotene is directed at the regions of carotenoid accumulation within a skin disorder. Thermal coagulation necrosis of the carotenoid-accumulation skin region results, though thermal damage to surrounding tissue is limited in amount.

    • Apparatus formed of a laser lucent hollow, transparent needle (10) with an optical fiber (12) disposed within its interior. Means such as a spacer (14) can be used to retain the fiber in position within the needle. In a particular embodiment, the end of the needle adjacent to the energy transmitting end of the fiber is closed, and energy scatterers or diffusers (18) may be provided to alter the characteristics of the transmitted energy. In further embodiments, scattering or diffusing materials (32) are disposed within the walls and the closed end (16) of the needle to form a laser lucent apparatus customized to specific hyperthermia requirements. In other embodiments, the needle is open-ended for insertion of a specialized instrument for such uses as biopsies and spectroscopic tissue analyses. These procedures can be conducted before or after hyperthermia treatment of the tissue by replacing fiber in the needle casing with such a specialized instrument or vice-versa. A particular application facilitates the use of laser-induced hyperthermia to treat benign prostatic hypertrophy.
