    • A vehicule suspension system having a pair of hanger brackets and a pair of beams. A first end (16) of each beam is pivotally attached to each hanger bracket, and an axle is rigidly attached to the second end (18) of each beam. A tri-functional bushing (61) is positioned at each pivot to provide a horizontal spring rate different from the vertical spring rate. Each beam is formed with a top section (30) and a bottom section (31) which are joined along the longitudinal axis. Both the top section and bottom section are formed with axle recesses (35, 39) complementary related to a portion of the axle. Each axle recess is formed with a trailing edge (46) positioned on either side of a arcuate section (53) of the axle. In one embodiment, a rear plate (56) extends downwardly from the top section adjacent the front of the axle and is welded thereto. In another embodiment, a half sleeve is positioned circumferentially around a front portion of the axle and is complementary related to the axle recesses of the top section and the bottom section. In this embodiment, a portion of the half sleeve adjacent the neutral axis is removed, and a plug weld is positioned therein to secure the half sleeve of the axle and a weld bead is provided circumferentially around the half sleeve adjacent the axle recesses formed in the top section and bottom section to secure the trailing beam to the half sleeve.

    • A vehicle suspension system having a pair of hanger brackets (5) and a pair of beams (15). A first end of each beam is attached, via a bushing sleeve to each hanger bracket, and an axle (19) is rigidly attached to the second end of each beam. Each beam is manufactured from a plurality of layers of laminate material which extend circumferentially around the axle and the bushing sleeve (30). An adhesive layer extends between the bushing sleeve and axle, and the layers of laminated material, for securing the bushing sleeve and axle to the beam. Inasmuch as the laminate material and adhesive have relatively low modulus of elasticity, these materials flex in response to movement of the axle, thereby assuring that the connection between the laminate beam (15) and the axle (19) remains stable, even as the axle moves in response to forces acting thereon. In another embodiment of the invention, each beam (47) is integrally formed with an air spring piston (48). In another embodiment of the invention, a parallelogram suspension is provided with a pair of parallel and spaced-apart control arms (62) manufactured of laminate material. Alternatively, the control arms of the parallelogram-type suspension may be integrally formed with a stabilizer bar (68) extending therebetween. In alternative embodiments, a pair of air spring pistons (48) may be mounted on the stabilizer bar (68), substantially reducing the weight and cost associated with the manufacture and operation of air spring suspension systems.

    • A suspension system (1) for mounting to a vehicle frame includes a pair of stationary hanger brackets each formed with a compression plate and a pair of sidewalls. A movable hanger bracket (11) is pivotally mounted on a pivot pin (33) intermediate the sidewalls of the stationary hanger bracket, and a beam (10) is pivotally mounted to each movable hanger bracket. An axle (14) extends substantially perpendicular to the beams, and is rigidly attached thereto. An elastomeric bushing (51) is positioned intermediate the movable hanger bracket and the stationary hanger bracket with a compression bolt (43) extending therethrough. A nut (44) threadably engages the compression bolt to draw the movable hanger bracket toward the compression plate (22) thereby applying a compressive force to the elastomeric bushing. As the bushing compresses and the movable hanger bracket moves toward the compression plate of the stationary hanger bracket, the beam (10) is similarly pulled toward the compression plate of the stationary hanger bracket thereby aligning the beam and interconnected axle (14) with the vehicle path of travel. The compression bolt (43) may be adjusted periodically as the trailer ages through use.
