    • A method (10) of configuring a synchronous optical switch to route received data cells. The synchronous optical switch comprises optical switch transmitter modules, each comprising tunable optical transmitters, optical switch receiver modules, each comprising optical receivers, and optical connections between the transmitter modules and receiver modules. For each optical switch transmitter module, the method: assigns (12) wavelengths associated with the received data cells to the transmitters such that each wavelength is assigned to a different transmitter; and generates (14) a control signal for controlling the operating wavelength of each transmitter. For each wavelength, the method: allocates (16) to each transmitter an optical connection such that each optical switch transmitter module has no more than one connection exiting it at said wavelength and each optical receiver module has no more than one connection entering it at said wavelength; and generates (18) a control signal for connecting each transmitter to the respective optical connection.

    • A passive optical network has an optical line terminal (10), passive add drop wavelength multiplexers (20), at different locations along a first optical path, and an optical network termination part (30) coupled to the optical add path and optical drop path of a respective one of the passive add drop multiplexers. The passive add drop wavelength multiplexers are stand-alone parts separate from their respective optical network termination parts, being optically passive, unpowered and having a static configuration of wavelengths. By using such passive ADMs spread along the first optical path acting as a feeder, the PON is no longer limited to a tree structure. Also, the expense of an AWG device can be avoided. By making the ADMs stand-alone passive devices they can be located anywhere, and are non-specific to the types of terminal equipment, so later upgrade or standardisation of the terminal equipment is easier.

    • A node (20) of a wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) comprises wavelength division multiplexing optical line termination (OLT) apparatus (22). The OLT (22) has an optical interface (23) for interfacing with a plurality of remote optical network units (11) in a passive optical network using a plurality of different wavelength channels (λ). The OLT (22) has a plurality of electrical first ports (24) corresponding to the optical wavelength channels (λ). A plurality of second ports (33) interface with at least two operator networks (40-42). An electrical switching matrix (30) interconnects the first ports (24) and the second ports (33), allowing any operator (40-42) to access any subscriber in a point-to-point manner. The apparatus at node (20) can be formed as a plurality of modules (25).
