    • The invention relates to a monitoring device for an catenary system (10) of an overhead line installation, which system has a contact wire (11) which is supported by a bearing cable (12) and has the purpose of feeding energy into an electrical traction vehicle. The monitoring device comprises at least one sensor unit for acquiring a signal which is triggered by a damaging event (B) in the catenary system (10), in particular in the contact wire (11). The at least one sensor unit is connected in a fixed fashion to the overhead line installation in a monitoring region. The monitoring device also comprises an evaluation unit for analysing the signal. According to the invention, the at least one sensor unit is embodied as an electroacoustic transducer (20, 21, 22, 23) which is acoustically coupled to the contact wire (11) in order to convert an acoustic signal caused by a damaging event (B) into an electrical signal (s). As a result, a monitoring device is made available with which the state of an overhead line system can be monitored cost-effectively in real time for a multiplicity of possible damaging events.
