    • An improved lubrication system for drive axle assemblies (10) is provided that uses a collector (24) in connection with a filter plug (26) to lower the dynamic lubricant level in the drive axle assembly (10) and filter contaminants in the lubricant sump (36). The collector (24) is affixed to a cover plate (14) attached to the drive axle housing (12) and defines a well (72) and a flow passage (74) proximate the bottom of the well (72). The flow passage (74) is aligned with an opening (38) through which lubricant is inserted into the housing. A plug (26) with a filter (84) is inserted through the opening (38) in the cover plate (14) and into the flow passage (74). The invention reduces churning losses by lowering the dynamic lubricant level in the axle assembly without having a negative impact on lubricant life.

    • A tandem axle assembly is provided. The tandem axle assembly includes a forward axle assembly (12) and a rear axle assembly (14) and an intermediate drive shaft assembly (16) extending between the two axle assemblies. The forward and rear axle assemblies both includes a pinion gear (98) rotating responsive to an inter-axle differential (22) and a ring gear (100) in mesh with the pinion gear. The forward pinion gear is offset from the rear ring gear by a second predetermined distance. The second predetermined distance (H1) is greater than zero, but is less than the first predetermined distance (H2). The variation in offsets enables both equal working angles (21, 22) in the intermediate drive shaft assembly and a reduction in those angles as compared to conventional tandem axle assemblies. Further, the variation in offset results in stronger and quieter gearing.
