    • The invention relates to a lane keeping system for a motor vehicle, comprising: a lane detection system for detecting and determining the lane in front of the vehicle, a vehicle position determination system for determining the vehicle trajectory by means of a motion variable of the vehicle, a control device for producing a steering torque that acts on the steering system of the motor vehicle for the purpose of lane keeping. According to the invention, the lane detection system is designed to detect roadway edge and lane markings, roadway edges and objects; the control device produces forecast points on the vehicle trajectory and determines threshold values according to the objects specifying the surroundings situation in the vicinity of the forecast points in regard to roadway edge and lane markings, roadway edges and objects; and the control device determines a predicted distance, which indicates the distance of the vehicle at the forecast point on the vehicle trajectory from the object specifying the surroundings situation at the forecast point. The invention relates to a lane keeping system for a motor vehicle, comprising: a lane detection system for detecting and determining the lane in front of the vehicle, a vehicle position determination system for determining the vehicle trajectory by means of a motion variable of the vehicle, a control device for producing a steering torque that acts on the steering system of the motor vehicle for the purpose of lane keeping. According to the invention, the lane detection system is designed to detect roadway edge and lane markings, roadway edges, objects, in particular structural boundaries in the vicinity of the roadway edge and/or of the lane edge, and vehicles in adjacent lanes of the lane in which the vehicle is driving; the control device produces forecast points on the vehicle trajectory and determines threshold values according to the objects specifying the surroundings situation in the vicinity of the forecast points in regard to roadway edge and lane markings, roadway edges, objects, in particular structural boundaries in the vicinity of the roadway edge and/or of the lane edge, and vehicles in adjacent lanes of the lane in which the vehicle is driving; the control device reduces or increases the threshold according to the predicted distance in order to produce an engagement distance; and if the lateral distance of the vehicle from the object specifying the surroundings situation falls below the engagement distance, a steering torque is applied to the steering system, wherein the engagement magnitude depends on the lateral distance of the vehicle from the object specifying the surroundings situation.
