摘要： Compositions and methods for decreasing the viability of cells, particularly aberrant non-healthy cells, and most particularly cancer cells, are disclosed. The primary agent that causes cell death is a toxic metal atom or ion. Embodiments of the invention provide compositions and methods to ensure that the toxic metal is directed to the desired cell or tissue. In one embodiment, the metal is bound to a sulfur-rich peptide or protein carrier containing a targeting moiety. Such metal-protein complex is targeted to the selected cells or tissues to enrich the cell or tissue site with the metal-containing peptide or protein molecules followed by administering a dithiocarbonyl which carries the metal from the protein inside the cells to induce cell death.

摘要： Embodiments of the invention provide mouse tumor models involving either the B16 mouse melanoma or MXT mouse mammary tumor, untreated or treated with chemotherapy and/or anti-cachectic agents, for the study of tumor-generated or cancer therapy-generated cachexia-inducing signals and mechanisms. Other embodiments of the invention also provide additional models, including pre-treatment of mouse skin with anti-cachectic proteins prior to tumor implantation, for the study of anti-cachectic signals and mechanisms generated by the skin. To reduce or reverse tumor- and chemotherapy- induced cachexia, embodiments of the invention use the human proteins placental alkaline phosphatase, transferrin, α 1 -antitrypsin preparations or combinations thereof as well as chemically synthesized CCDTHT orN,N-diethyl-N-methyl-2-[(9-oxo-9H- thioxanthen-2-yl)methoxy]-ethanaminium iodide or CCDTΗT-like compounds.

摘要： It has been found that placenta alkaline phosphatase interacts synergistically with growth factors and corresponding serum factors to stimulate the proliferation of adult fibroblast cells. Furthermore, this stimulation of fibroblast proliferation does not result in a corresponding stimulation of collagen synthesis. Thus, wound healing compositions can be formulated that improve wound healing without increasing scar formation. Compositions for wound healing can include placental alkaline phosphatase and a gel-forming material. In some embodiments, compositions include placental alkaline phosphatase and serum/growth factors. In addition to wound healing applications, compositions with placental alkaline phosphatase can also be used in cell sulturing of adult fibroblast cells.

The methods include steps of administering topically on the skin tumor or a skin cancer- free area of compositions containing therapeutically effective amounts of human alkaline phosphatase, transferrin and αl -antitrypsin. In some embodiments, the composition is topically administered and includes all three proteins. Alkaline phosphatase, alone or in combination with transferrin and αl -antitrypsin can also be administered by injection with or without simultaneous or sequential topical administration. Administration of compositions topically and/or by injection can be part of a more complex cancer therapy including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and electrochemotherapy.
