    • Methods UE and eNB for transmitting a waveform for wireless communication networks are provided. A method for UE to transmit to an eNB an uplink channel carrying data or control information bits, comprising: receiving an OFDM-based downlink channel occupying a set of downlink resource elements, where each downlink resource element has a downlink subcarrier spacing in the frequency domain and a downlink symbol duration in the time domain; generating a SC-FDMA based uplink channel from the information bits, where the uplink channel occupies a set of uplink resource elements and each uplink resource element has a uplink subcarrier spacing in the frequency domain differing from the downlink subcarrier spacing, and a uplink symbol duration in the time domain differing from the downlink symbol duration; and transmitting the SC-FDMA based uplink channel. In one embodiment, the information bits are uplink data information bits. In another embodiment, the information bits are uplink control information bits.

    • Apparatus and methods are provided to enhance HARQ mechanism. The UE repeatedly transmits a data block with a first repetition number and retransmits the data block with a second repetition number. In one embodiment, the first and the second repetition number value are explicitly included in an uplink grant message. In another embodiment, the UE obtains a repetition number value by looking up a repetition number table indexed by the repetition number indicator, which is included in an uplink grant message for the first repetition number and included in a HARQ message for the second repetition number. In yet another embodiment, the UE determines a coverage enhancement degree value, a data block size value and an available transport resource block size. The UE obtains a repetition number by table-look-up based on the coverage-enhancement degree value, the data block size, and the transport resource block size.

    • A receiver with DFT based channel estimation having good noise suppression for both high and low signal-to-noise ratios providing advantages over conventional DFT estimators and Minimum-Mean-Square-Error (MMSE) estimators. The use of MMSE may be incorporated for estimation at the band edges providing further improvements. The received signal in the time domain, is transformed to the frequency-domain received signal via an N-point FFT (501). The frequency-domain received signal at the pilot locations is then used to obtain a "noisy" channel estimates at the pilot subcarriers by dividing the known pilot symbols in (503). Uniformly spaced pilots are assumed over a window of usable subcarriers. Padding is applied to the initial channel estimates at both sides of the band to account for unused subcarriers such as guard spacing. Weighting factors during power estimation may take into account various noise characteristics such as combinations of known and time-limited noise power characteristics.
