    • A wireless communication system is so designed as to require a transmitting station to amend the format of its transmission burst in cases where the transmitting station has recently transmitted a similar burst. The format of its transmission burst may be changed by omitting synchronisation and training sequences, or by transmitting different parts of the burst in modulation types of successively increasing constellation density. In this system the decision of which transmission burst is to be used is based solely on the time since the last transmission. Amending the format of the transmission burst in this manner results in a net data transfer capacity improvement over systems commonly employed.

    • A latching assembly for securing a battery package (12) to a portable communication device. The latching assembly comprises a pair of opposed moveable latches (10), each latch (10) being located toward a side of the battery package, and a biasing member or members (13) arranged to bias the latches (10) away from each other to engage with respective catches on the portable communication device to thereby secure the battery package (12) to the portable communication device. User contacts (15) are also provided and these are operable to cause the latches (10) to move toward each other to disengage from their respective catches to enable the battery package (12) to be removed from the portable communication device.

    • A mobile radio system having two or more power saving modes available to mobile stations, wherein the mode adopted by the stations is determined by the presence or absence of synchronisation signals on a channel in the system and by at least one time limit for occurrence of the synchronisation signals. The system may have three power saving modes in accord with a state of the channel determined by a signalling mobile station, by a beacon, or by the absence of a signalling station or a beacon. The system may have one or more time limits that define intervals for which mobiles must wait before commencing signalling and transmission of a synchronisation signal, for which a beacon must wait before commencing transmission of a synchronisation signal, and/or for which mobiles must wait before sleeping in the absence of a synchronisation signal.
