    • An intraocular accommodating lens comprising a resilient polymer monolith with a peripheral component that has a Young's modulus and an equilibrium memory shape that imparts to the capsular sac's periphery the natural shape of the capsule in an accommodated state. The intraocular lens includes a central deformable optic that provides accommodated and disaccommodated shapes. The peripheral component is deformable to a disequilibrium, stressed shape in responsive to equatorial tensioning-and is capable of applying restorative forces to move the lens toward the accommodated shape from a disequilibrium disaccommodated shape. In one embodiment, the central optic portion includes a displaceable media than can be displaced by very low forces of zonular excursion, wherein the displaceable media can comprise a very low modulus polymer or an index-matched fluid.

    • An accommodating intraocular lens IOL (10) including a peripheral non-optic portion comprising haptics (12) and (14). The IOL also includes an optic portion including anterior lens element (16), intermediate layer (18) which comprises actuator (20), and substrate, or posterior element (22). ' Anterior element (16) is bonded to intermediate layer (18) at its periphery. The anterior element, may also be bonded to actuator (20). The intermediate layer is also bonded to posterior element (22). The inner surface of haptics (12) and (14) define interior volumes (24) which are in fluid communication with active channel (26) defind by posterior element (22) and intermediate layer (18). As shown, actuator (20) is integral with intermediate layer (18). Posterior element (22) is molded with buttresses (11) which include a buttress bore (13) therethrough. The haptics have a haptic attachment element (15) which is sized and shaped to fit within buttless bore (13).
