    • Human and mammalian skin undergoes a variety of changes associated with chronological aging. Various environmental factors, disease states and genetic disorders may accelerate both the appearance of aging skin and also the structural and functional changes associated with aging skin. Ultraviolet radiation from the sun is one of the classic known and well-defined means of accelerating or worsening the aging of the skin and this is frequently termed photoaging. Other environmental factors, such as oxidative stress, free radicals, environmental toxins such as ozone and cultural customs or habits such as tobacco smoking are other known probe accelerators in photo aging skin. A wide variety of other factors known and unknown contribute to accelerated or premature aging of the skin. This invention discusses methods where electromagnetic radiation, in particular, light, can be used to photobiomodulate the activity of living cells to delay, diminish, retard or even reverse the structural and functional effects of aging of the skin and other living cells and tissues. In particular methods described for improving the appearance, structure, function of aging skin, including up and down regulating the genotypic markers for the phenotype of aging skin.

    • A long pulse alexandrite laser for treating dermatological specimens is disclosed. The use of alexandrite allows operation in the near-infrared, specifically in a 50 nm range surrounding 755. Infrared in this range allows good penetration while still achieving an acceptable ratio of hemoglobin to melanin absorption. In operation, the laser generates pulses having a durations between 5 and 100 msec and fluences between 10 and 50 J/cm . A light delivery system is provided that transmits the laser light output pulse to dermatological targets of a patient. The invention is also directed to a hair removal system. Here, it is desirable to use an index-matching application on the skin sections to be treated, and a visual indicator is thermo- or photo-responsive or otherwise responsive to the laser light pulse to generate a visible change. This provides the operator with a record of those parts of the skin that have already been treated. Finally, the invention is directed to a combined sclerotherapy and light treatment method and kit for unwanted veins. Substantially increased success, in the range of 90-100 % has been achieved by implementing a dwell time of between 12 hours and 6 months between the light-based therapy and the sclerotherapy. Preferably, the light-based therapy is performed before the sclerotherapy. Success can be achieved by performing the sclerotherapy followed by the light-based therapy after the dwell time, however.

Based on these analyses, methods and compositions are described for modifying or influencing the lifespan of cells, tissues, organs, and organisms. In various embodiments, there are provided methods for modulating the activity of the gene maintenance process in order to influence the length and/or structural integrity of the telomere in living cells, as well as methods for modulating the rate/efficiency of the cellular respiration provided by the mitochondria, mitochondrial biogenesis, and maintenance of the mitochondrial membrane potential. Exemplary lifespan altering compounds include natural and synthetic antioxidants, such as plant antioxidant and polyphenol compounds derived from coffee cherry, tea, berry, and so forth, including but not limited to caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, quinic acid, proanthocyanidins, ubiquinone, idebenone, or a synthetic form or derivatives thereof.
