    • A beverage forming system (100) and method in which a cartridge holder (3) is movably mounted to the frame and has an opening (3a) to receive a cartridge (1). The cartridge holder may be arranged to hold and move a cartridge between an open position in which the opening of the cartridge holder is oriented in an upwardly inclined position to receive the cartridge, and a closed position in which the opening is oriented in a horizontal or downwardly inclined position.     • A cartridge (10) for forming a beverage includes a container (12) defining an interior space (14), a filter (30), a beverage medium (20) contained in the interior space, an a filter guard (40). The filter (30) may be arranged so that liquid that interacts with the beverage medium flows through the filter to exit the interior space. The container may include a surface arranged to be pierced by a piercing member (52) to permit beverage to exit the container. The filter guard (40) may be arranged to contact the piercing member (52) to resist damage to the filter when the container surface is pierced. In one embodiment, the filter guard (40) and filter (30) may be in contact with the container surface that is pierced, yet damage to the filter that might be caused by the piercing element may be avoided.

    • For use in a single serve beverage brewer in which a measured charge of a dry beverage medium is infused with a metered amount of heated liquid to produce a beverage medium, a reusable beverage filter cartridge is provided for containing the beverage medium and for accommodating an inflow of the heated liquid and an outflow of the beverage medium. The cartridge comprises a cup-shaped housing (10) having a top opening (18) and a closed bottom (22) with an outlet port (24). A filter (12) internally subdivides the housing into a first chamber (A) accessible via the top opening (18) and configured and dimensioned to contain the beverage medium, and a second chamber (B) communicating with the outlet port (24). A lid (16) is removably secured to the housing in a position closing the top opening (18), and an inlet port (30) in the lid serves to admit heated liquid into the first chamber (A) for infusion with the beverage medium contained therein. The filter (12) is permeable to accommodate a flow therethrough of the resulting beverage into the second chamber (B) from which it exits via the outlet port (24).

    • An automated beverage brewing system includes a liquid storage tank and a metering chamber. The metering chamber is at least partially submerged beneath a standing level of liquid in the storage tank. The chamber includes a sealable liquid inlet port communicating with the interior of the storage tank beneath the standing level of liquid. The chamber also includes a liquid outlet port and an aperture that receives compressed air, wherein the compressed air forces liquid from the liquid output port of the chamber for use in preparing a brewed beverage. A pump provides the compresses air and a controller monitors a pressure signal value indicative of the air pressure in the metering chamber. The controller commands the pump on to commence flow of liquid from the metering chamber. The controller then commands the pump off several seconds after detecting a drop in air pressure within the chamber. A baffle is affixed to the distal end of a shaft, which is moved between a first and second position. In the second position the baffle seals a section of the storage tank to form the metering chamber. The system may also include a second brew pump that allows a user to costumize the quantity of liquid delivered from the brewing system for a stronger brewed beverage.

The outlet chamber may have a standpipe (74) in the outlet chamber between the inlet (71) and the outlet (73) openings that prevents a direct passage of beverage to the outlet openings (73), thus controlling characteristics of the beverage, such as an amount of foam, the size of bubbles in a foam, etc. The standpipe (74) may have a portion extending upwardly from a bottom of the outlet chamber and impeding a direct flow path between the inlet and the outlet openings (71,73), thus forcing flow to pass around and/or over the standpipe portion.
