    • A disc brake comprises an operating mechanism (26) operable to move friction material pads (18) into contact with a disc (16). The operating mechanism comprises a support body (28) located on one side of the disc (16), a cylinder (30) defined by the support body, and a piston (32) in the cylinder. The operating mechanism also comprises a guidance member (36) for the pads (18). The guidance member (36) projects from the support body (28) past the disc (16) and supports an abutment (24) on which one of said pads (18) is mounted. The guidance member (36) is mounted on the support body (28) by means of a plurality of bolts (44) which extend through bores (48) in the guidance member to said abutment (24). The bolts (44) take the load during application of the brake.

    • A suspension and braking assembly for a wheel of vehicle, comprises a suspension link (12), a hub (14) mounted on the suspension link for rotation relative thereto, a brake disc (38) mounted for rotation with the hub, friction material pads (50, 54) arranged on opposite sides of the disc, and a piston and cylinder assembly (72, 74) operable to urge the pads against the disc. The link (12) comprises top (24) and bottom (26) mountings for supports. The suspension link (12) also comprises the cylinder (72) of said piston and cylinder assembly which is formed integrally with the remainder of the link. Said disc (38) is mounted for limited movement on the hub (14) in a direction generally parallel to the axis about which the hub rotates.

    • A friction pad assembly (10) is suitable for use in a disc brake. The assembly (10) comprises a backing plate (12), a block of friction material (14) secured to a surface (16) of the backing plate (12), and a spring (22) secured to the backing plate (12) at an edge region thereof. Said region of the backing plate (12) has a pillar (20) extending therefrom normally of the plate (12), the backing plate (12) and the pillar (20) being cast as a unit. The spring (22) comprises a central coil (24) which passes around the pillar (20) and is an interference fit thereon so that the spring (22) is retained on the pillar (20).
