    • An airbag module (20, 20a) has an inflator (300), a first support member (200 - 200a), a second support member (250, 250a - 250d) and a cover (30) for enclosing an airbag (100). The cover includes a plurality of resilient tabs (48). The tabs are situated about a cavity (38) that receives the airbag (100). A formation having a thickened tip is formed on an end of each tab. The thickened tip is a lock feature (50) that prevents the cover from disengaging from the first and second support members. Each tab and associated lock feature is movable from a rest position to a deflected position upon contact with one of the plates. The first and second support members are disposed about each tab and cooperate to define an effective narrow opening that is smaller than the thick tip. This prevents movement of the thick tip through the first and second support members and the disengagement of the cover from the first and second support members.

    • An airbag (14) has a knee cushion portion (18) and a neck portion (22). The airbag (14) and inflator (50) are stored in a module housing (94) until deployment. The neck portion (22) extends to the knee cushion portion (18) and is sized so that upon inflation of the neck portion the knee cushion is advanced horizontally far enough away from the housing to cover a face of the instrument panel (16) as the knee cushion portion (18) inflates. The knee cushion portion (18) of the inflation chamber contains a tether (54) that guides the knee cushion portion in an upward direction. The tether (54) zigzags between a front panel (30) and a back panel (34) of the knee cushion (18). This design assists in the upward deployment of the knee cushion from the neck of the airbag. The knee cushion (18) has a passageway (46) spaced between a sidewall (38, 42) of the knee cushion portion (18) and the tether (54). This passageway (42) also serves to direct the knee cushion (18) upward. In this way, the inventive airbag module creates a quickly deploying surface that covers a portion of the vehicle instrument panel that could otherwise lead to injuries of the vehicle occupant's lower extremities.

The airbag housing (26) has slots (30) therethrough that are spaced around a mouth (54) of the airbag housing (26). There are hooks (38) on the exterior of the airbag housing (26). The airbag (18) has flaps (22) that extend through slots (30) in the airbag housing (26). The flaps (22) have holes (22) therethrough. The hooks (38) extend through the holes (22) in the flaps (22) to secure the airbag (18) to the airbag housing (26).
