    • A restraint apparatus 10 for protecting a vehicle occupant in a side impact or rollover event. The restraint apparatus 10 includes a deployment guide 21 that includes a housing having a channel 30 with a substantially smoothed interior 33 and longitudinal slot 32. A guide member 21 is slidably retained in the channel 30 and has an extension 20 protruding from the slotted side of the channel 30. The extension 20 is attachable to a restraint device 12 deployable laterally of a vehicle occupant. An actuator 18 is provided and is operable to drive the guide member 21 from a first end of the channel 30 toward a second end. A driving of the guide member 21 facilitates deployment of the restraint device 12 and supplies at least a longitudinal tensioning force to the restraint device 12 to provide lateral support thereto.

    • A head-protecting airbag device (M1) comprises an airbag (12) having a portion (13) into which gas flows and a portion (23) into which gas does not flow. The portion (13) into which gas flows is provided with a gas supply passage portion (14) capable of allowing an inflating gas (G) to blow in a forward-backward direction of a vehicle and with longitudinal inflating portions (17) arranged side by side in a row in the forward-backward direction. Longitudinal inflating portions (17) have a communication opening (18) that communicates with the gas supply passage portion (14) is opened at an upper end of the portion (13) into which gas flows. At a peripheral edge (19) of the communication opening (18), substantial lengths of films of a vehicle exterior-side wall portion (13b) and vehicle interior-side wall portion (13a) are different because of a belt (31). The peripheral edge (19) of the communication opening (18) guides the inflating gas (G) so that the gas (G) flows through the communication opening (18) diagonally downward toward a vehicle exterior side (O) into the longitudinal inflating portions (17). The head-protecting airbag device (M1) can be structured compactly while the airbag (12) is even allowed to expand downward along a window (W), and workability of mounting the device on a vehicle can be improved.
