    • A crash protection system includes a base connectable to a support on an open vehicle or an animal. The base includes a front airbag module arranged proximate a front end of the base and a rear airbag module arranged proximate a rear end of the base. The front airbag module has a front airbag, and the rear airbag module has a rear airbag. The system further includes a belt system having a first belt connectable around a waist of a rider and at least one strap connecting the first belt to the base. A control system includes sensors that are monitored to determine whether a crash situation is present and the control system actuates the front airbag module and the rear airbag module and releases the base from the support when the crash situation is present.

A method of testing an airbag module is provided in which said module is tested for exposure to a given fluid, for example, water. The fluid exposure test ideally comprises the step of inspecting said airbag module or a swab taken therefrom by means of Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy techniques. The present invention thereby provides a testing method sufficiently rigorous to identify fluid damage potentially suffered by a previously installed airbag module during its service life.

    • An electronic crash sensing unit for detecting and discriminating a crash and actuating occupant safety device(s) such as air bags (108, 109). The unit is designed and constructed to operate within an aircraft, but may be used in ground and sea-going vehicles as well. It provides crash acceleration sensing coverage for impact angles occurring throughout aircraft upper and lower hemispherical directions, which are defined by longitudinal, lateral, and vertical aircraft fixed axes as well as any combination of coordinats thereof. It can sense an aircraft acceleration event (115), determine if the acceleration is a normally occurring event not requiring air bag deployment or a crash event that warrants deployment. The crash sensing unit uses a microprocessor (114) and algorithm to discriminate crash events that warrant safety device deployment from no-crash events, and to actuate deployment. The crash sensing unit compares continuously measured acceleration and calculated total velocity change to define go/no-go threshold criteria. A crash event is defined as the exceeding both acceleration and velocity change thresholds.
