    • A mechanical lock (104) for an airplane engine thrust reverser is connected to an actuator (54) for the thrust sleeve (28). The mechanical lock (104) includes an electrically operated solenoid (124) which moves a locking pin (120) between an unlocked position and a locked position. When the pin (120) is in the locked position, it engages a toothed wheel (114) which is mounted about a shaft (110) which engages a drive gear (90) for the thrust reverser actuator (54). In this manner, movement of the thrust reverser sleeve (28) is prevented until commanded operation of the thrust reverser whereby the locking pin (120) is moved to the unlocked position.

    • A sensor that comprises an encoder that includes three or more tracks extending along a sensing axis. Each track (i) has a modulus (mi), and a property that varies along the sensing axis such that the property can have one of (mi) distinguishable levels. The moduli (mi) of the tracks are all pairwise relatively prime. The tracks are formed such that a value is associated with each position along the sensing axis, the level of each track (i) at a given position being equal to residue of the value at that position to modulus (mi). The detector detects the levels of the tracks at a detection position along the sensing axis, and produces output signals corresponding to such levels. The track with the largest modulus comprises a redundant track that provides error detection capability.
