摘要： The present invention comprises the provision and use of a novel retainer which is slidably advanced to a desired fixation position within a bone tunnel, fixed in position within the bone tunnel (preferably by wedging and/or pinning) while applying a lateral force against the graft ligament so as to compressively hold the graft ligament against the sidewall of the bone tunnel, and which then, optionally, has the graft ligament secured thereto with a cap, whereby to secure the graft ligament to the retainer and hence additionally to the host bone. The present invention also comprises the provision and use of a novel retainer which is slidably advanced to a desired fixation position within a bone tunnel so as to apply a lateral force against the graft ligament so as to compressively hold the graft ligament against the sidewall of the bone tunnel, and which is then locked to the host bone as the graft ligament is simultaneously secured to the retainer, whereby to secure the graft ligament to the retainer and hence additionally to the host bone.

摘要： An orthopedic swivel screw comprises a threaded shaft and a tissue retainer, which elements are held together by a swivel joint. By virtue of its design, the swivel screw can be installed into a bore in a bone by turning and either pushing or pulling the treaded shaft with a tool. Use of the swivel screw for repair of the ACL, in particular ligament replacement, eliminates or at least minimizes the twisting that typically occurs during conventional ACL repair surgery. In addition, tension of the ligament graft can be precisely adjusted by using the swivel screw in combination with a tension-adjusting device such as a split-nut fastener or a tension bolt. The split-nut is used in combination with any implantable bolt used in orthopedic devices. The split-nut, has two halves, slides down a threaded rod until a rig surrounding the two halves forces them together. The split-nut is then readily threaded tightly onto the threaded rod.

摘要： A bone fastener including an expandable member (10) having an axial channel (18) and an elongated element (34), insertable into the axial channel (18), is described. The expandable member (10) is configured to be insertable into a bore drilled in a bone. The distal end (14) of the expandable member (10) also may include a structure for axially releasing the expandable member (10) from an emplacement device that places the expandable member (10) into a bone opening. In one embodiment the structure for axially releasing includes a frangible membrane capable of being severed from the expandable member (10) during emplacement of the expandable member (10) in a bone opening. A rivet (22) for coupling an object to bone for use with an expandable member (10), is also described. The distal end (14) of the elongated element (34) is shaped into a radially projecting portion adapted for engagement with a washer (62) that contacts the object to be coupled. The washer (62), having upper and lower surfaces, and a bore defined between the surfaces, is disposed around a portion of the shaft. The elongated element (10) is adapted for movement independent of the washer since the radial projection of the element has a different radius of curvature than the washer (62).
