    • The present invention is a data communication system (100) that allows communication between general machines (132, 134, 135, 136, 137, 138) having different protocols. A switch matrix (102, 104, 106, 108) contains at least a general connection interface port that can support one or more general machines. These machines and the port communicate using a defined protocol. Another interface port can be installed in the same switch matrix or a different switch matrix that is far away from the first switch matrix. The second port can support one or more machines that communicate using a different protocol. The machines connected to the first port and the second port may be any combination of hosts and/or devices (132, 134, 135, 136, 137, 138). A machine connected to the first port can send commands to, or receive command from, a specific machine connected to the second port, even though they normally cannot communicate with one another because they use different protocols.

    • A high bandwidth central memory controller utilizing a pipelined TDM bus such that each serial interface can sustain a bandwidth of up to 100 MByte/second for both the transmission and reception of variable length frames. Each port is assigned a fixed number of queues, a TDM slot number and the address routing for all other queues associated with the remaining ports at initialization, such that when a frame is received, the appropriate queue is determined from the addressing in the frame header and the initialized route tables. When the port's TDM slot for a memory request is active, a request for the output queue is made to the central memory controller if an "output queue available" indication is returned and the frame data is placed on the bus during the input port's data TDM slot. If the output queue is not available, the input port may either discard the received data frame or generate a busy/reject frame to be placed on one of its own output queues during its TDM data slot.

    • In a method of transferring data packets between a plurality of network elements (14; 28) in a teletransmission network (1), at least some data packets are transferred at a bit rate which depends on available network capacity. When arriving at a network element, packets are positioned in a plurality of input queues (33; 37). Then, the packets are transferred from the input queues (33; 37) to at least one output queue (38) at a bit rate which is regulated by a factor ( lambda ) which depends on the filling degree of the output queue. A network element (14; 28) for use in such a teletransmission network (1) comprises a plurality of input queues (33; 37) in which data packets are positioned when they arrive at a network element. The network element moreover comprises at least one output queue (38) to which the packets may be transferred from the input queues (33; 37), and means for transferring the packets from the input queues (33; 37) to the output queue (38) at a bit rate which may be regulated by a factor ( lambda ) which depends on the filling degree of the output queue.
