    • A toroidal variator having an input surface and an output surface coaxially mounted for rotation on a shaft defining a variator axis and two rollers in driving engagement with the input and output surfaces, a take-off drive operatively engaged with the output surface and disposed radially of the variator axis whereby a radial contact force perpendicular to and intersecting the variator axis is generated and wherein the rollers are located such that the points of contact of the rollers with the input and output surfaces at one particular ratio within the operating range of the variator lie generally in a plane which is substantially perpendicular to the direction of the radial contact force. This plane lies on or close to the neutral axis of bending of the variator structure whereby both normal contact loads between the discs and the two rollers will be generally the same.

    • In a toroidal variator a plurality of rolling elements (20,22) are in driving engagement with an input and output race (10, 14) at respective contact regions. Each rolling element (20, 22) is mounted on a carriage assembly (26) for rotation about a rolling axis, and is being free to pivot about a tilt axis, the tilt axis passing through the rolling element (20, 22) perpendicular to the rolling axis, and intersecting the rolling axis at a roller centre, whereby a change in the tilt axis causes a change in the variator ratio being the ratio of rotational speeds of the races. The tilt axis is arranged at an angle known as castor angle (see Fig.4) to a plane (P) perpendicular to the variator axis (V). Each carriage assembly (26) can cause a movement of the rolling element (20, 22) with a component of rotation about a pitch axis (A, B). The pitch axis is defined as passing through the roller centre and through the contact regions. Pitching the roller elements (20, 22) causes them to tilt, thereby changing the transmission ratio.

    • The invention concerns a traction control arrangement for a variator (10). The traction control arrangement has a traction control valve (119, 119a) which controls the traction load pressure and which is operable in at least two modes: 1) in a first mode, it receives (a) a first pilot pressure signal corresponding to the traction load pressure and (b) a second pilot pressure signal corresponding to the higher of the first and second reaction pressures, and controls the traction load pressure in response to the difference between the first and second pilot pressure signals; 2) in a second mode, it receives (a) a first pilot pressure signal corresponding to the traction load pressure, (b) a second pilot pressure signal corresponding to the higher of the first and second reaction pressures, and (c) a third pilot pressure signal corresponding to the lower of the first and second reaction pressures, and controls the traction load pressure as a function of the first, second and third pilot pressure signals. The relationship between traction load pressure and reaction force is different in the two modes and in this way provision is made to selectively alter the traction coefficient in the variator. According to a second aspect of the invention, a pre- stressed refiel spring acts in opposition to the traction load actuator.

    • The invention relates to an arrangement for controlling a variator in a continuously variable transmission such as a vehicle transmission. The arrangement comprises a user operable ratio control part such as a lever (50) and a device for operatively coupling the ratio control part to a movable torque transfer part of the variator such as its rollers (18). The coupling device is, in the particular embodiment described, a hydro-mechanical arrangement. By moving the user operable ratio control part (50), the user exercises control over the variator ratio. In accordance with the invention the arrangement further comprises a torque release device such as a valve (60) which is operable by the user to decouple the ratio control part from the movable torque transfer part. By doing so, the torque release device offers functionality which is in some ways analogous to that of a clutch in a conventional stepped ratio vehicle transmission.
