    • Precision saws such as scroll saws and the like are provided with a hold down apparatus which allows for enhanced work piece clearance thus, greater work piece thickness utilization of the saws wherein the hold down apparatus is mounted in an offset position allowing the hold down to be raised to a maximum height to just below reciprocating saw blade drive means. A work piece hold down apparatus for use in combination with a work piece table and a saw blade having a reciprocating drive means is provided wherein a work piece hold down apparatus having a hold down foot which is generally planar with forwardly projecting spaced apart arms for engaging the work piece on each side of the blade, the foot planar portion being connected to a rod member on a second planar portion of the hold down apparatus with the rod member being affixed to the hold down apparatus offset from the generally planar foot portion and adjustably mounted by clamping means to a saw frame member behind and adjacent to the reciprocating saw blade.

    • A sawing machine includes a base body which has a front portion, a rear portion and a worktable with a working surface, and a support body disposed adjacent to the rear portion. The worktable has a sawing slot that opens at the working surface. An upper hollow arm is fixed to the support body and is located above the working surface. A lower hollow arm is fixed to the support body and is located opposite to the upper hollow arm below the working surface. An upper shaft is mounted rotatably in the upper hollow arm, while a lower shaft is mounted rotatably in the lower hollow arm. A driving mechanism is mounted to the support body to drive the shafts to rotate synchronously. Two saw blade mounting members are mounted slidably and respectively to the hollow arms and define cooperatively a straight line passing through the sawing slot. The sawing machine has a converting unit for converting the synchronous rotations of the shafts into synchronous linear movements of the saw-blade mounting members. An elongated saw blade extends along the straight line and has two ends connected to the saw-blade mounting members.

    • A scroll saw is disclosed having a yoke with upper and lower reciprocable arms terminating in upper and lower ends having a saw blade connected therebetween. A motor, with a horizontally extending drive shaft, is mounted on the base for the saw. A connecting rod is coupled eccentrically at one end to the drive shaft and at the other end to the lower arm of the yoke. A second shaft is rotatably mounted on the base parallel to the drive shaft and is driven by intermeshing gears on the shafts. First and second counterbalances are mounted on the shafts which rotate with the shafts in opposite directions. The counterbalances, each having a center of mass offset radially from an axis of the shaft, are positioned on the shafts so as to enhance or compound the inertial effects of the counterbalances in a vertical direction to cancel out the inertial effects of the reciprocating yoke, and so as to cancel the inertial effects of each other in a horizontal direction.

    • The saw includes a frame having an opening with a pair of proximate and distal blade retaining chucks located on respective sides of the opening. A saw blade is retained between the pair of chucks. A plurality of pulleys are attached in spaced relation to the frame including pulleys on opposed sides of the opening. A flexible band is entrained about each of the plurality of pulleys, with the band having a first end operatively connected to the proximate blade retaining chuck and a second end attached to the distal blade retaining chuck. A reciprocating drive is attached to the proximate blade retaining chuck. The reciprocating drive and the flexible band work in conjunction to pull the blade in opposite directions during each cycle of the drive. An alternative embodiment of the present invention may take the form of a stationary table saw.
