    • The invention provides a low tension piston ring having a finished outer diameter and negligible tangential tension. The method includes the steps of machining a stock bar to an initial outer diameter slightly greater than the finished outer diameter of the piston ring, finishing the initial outer diameter of the stock bar to a rounded profile having a nominal diameter equal to the finished outer diameter, and machining the stock bar to the preferred cross-section. Dykes-type piston rings can have keystone or semi-keystone shaped cross-sections. The method continues by detaching the piston ring from the stock bar using a parting tool in response to completing all tension inducing operations including the steps recited above. The method continues with the steps of lapping the piston ring to a final longitudinal thickness and cutting the piston ring longitudinally to form a final gap.

    • A method of treating piston rings to render their surfaces extremely hard-wearing, wherein the rings are assembled in batches on a tubular mandrel which is then surrounded by a matching cylinder, the mandrel bearing the rings and the cylinder being subjected to relative cyclical motion while a slurry of hard silicon carbide particles is poured into the cylinder. Either the wall of the tubular mandrel, or the wall of the cylinder, or both, are provided with holes to allow the slurry to flow away. The cyclical motion may consist of relative rotation at 170 r.p.m. and simultaneous relative reciprocation at 5 cycles per minute. The slurry may consist of 220 mesh silicon carbide powder in oil, with the treatment lasting for one minute, and preferably this is followed by a further treatment of one minute with a 400 mesh silicon carbide particle slurry.

    • Method of manufacturing a radially corrugated expander-spacer for a piston oil ring assembly, having inner and outer crowns alternately and successively laid, which can prevent its both terminal ends from nesting together during assembling of the piston oil ring assembly. The inner crowns each includes an inner peripheral piece and an opening having a circumferential width larger than that of the inner peripheral piece, and the outer crowns each includes an outer peripheral piece and an opening having a circumferential width larger than that of the outer peripheral piece. The manufacturing method comprises the steps of filling thermosetting synthetic resin having bonding force with respect to metals into the openings of inner crowns at both terminal ends of the expander-spacer, and thereafter, setting the thus filled thermosetting synthetic resin so that the resin is fixedly secured to the openings of the inner crowns at both terminal ends of the expander-spacer. The resin is preferably fixed by irradiating ultraviolet rays thereto.
