    • A self-threading flagpole having two spaced pulleys fixed to a rotatable cap on its upper end and a slot connecting the outer periphery of the pulleys so that a rope in the form of a loop can be placed in the slot and over the pulleys by means of a pole without climbing the flagpole. The loop of rope passes over the periphery and down around the pulleys and down and around lower pulleys which are supported on a sleeve. The sleeve, in turn, is supported on the lower part of the flagpole by the rope and its weight provides tension on the ropes. When the wind blows the flag, the flag pulls the rope thereby lifting the sleeve and avoiding tearing of the flag.

    • A coupling device for connecting a mineral mining machine, such as a plough, to a drive chain. The coupling device is intended to locate within a channel inside a slotted guide containing the drive chain. The device is composed of coaxial tubular members secured together axially. The inner tubular member supports a swivel-mounted shackle connecting with the chain and a rigidly-mounted shackle connecting with the machine. One or both tubular members are shaped or relieved at the end nearest the swivel shackle to provide a cleaning nose which forces dust or the like from the channel as the chain draws the machine along the guide. A lateral projection on the outer tubular member engages in the slot and co-operates with the nose to guide the material away through the slot.

    • A mineral mining installation composed of a mineral winning machine such as a plough guided for movement along a conveyor. The plough has a sword plate extending beneath the conveyor and guided at the side of the conveyor remote from the machine. This guidance is provided by guide members attached to the sword plate and secured to a drive chain used for moving the plough. Guard plates are attached to the side of the conveyor remote from the machine and U-shaped cover plates are in turn affixed to the guard plates with the aid of screws and spacers. The guide members and drive chain run in a guide channel defined between the guard plates and cover plates and beneath the spacers. Each guide member is elongate and has a transversely-extending recess in its upper face. A roller or wear resistant insert is accommodated in the recess and seats on a spigot therein. Wearresistant pads are also attached to the guide members. As the sword plate tilts the periphery of the roller or a wear-resistant pad attached to the inner face of the insert is allowed to engage on the guard plates.

    • An electrical power supply and liquid supply arrangement for a mining machine, particularly a longwall mining machine, wherein extended lengths of a power supply cable and liquid supply conduit are disposed within a housing structure extending along one side of the course of travel of the mining machine. A side arm on the mining machine extends through a slot in a face plate of the housing structure and carries at its outer end a junction box within which power cables leading from the mining machine can be connected to or disconnected from an external power cable. Clamped to the aforesaid junction box is the liquid supply conduit which can be selectively coupled to, or uncoupled from, a mating supply conduit leading to the interior of the mining machine. The arrangement permits connection or disconnection of the power supply and water supply members to or from the mining machine without any disassembly of the machine itself.

    • A holding device for a chain is proposed, particularly for a chain associated with a coal cutter and having links located in two mutually transverse planes. The holding device has a chain block having two portions formed with a recess and bounding a slot. The recess is dimensioned for receiving an end portion of one of the chain links which is located in one of the planes, and the slot is dimensioned for receiving the other chain link which is located in the other of the planes. The recess may be U-shaped, and the slot extends in the direction of elongation of the chain block. Supporting portions may be provided for supporting one of the chain links which is located in a horizontal plane. Means may be provided for fastening the horizontal chain link to the supporting portions. Two additional such portions may be provided in the same chain block, spaced from the first two portions in the direction of elongation of the chain block. The slots of the two pairs of portions may be formed as a common slot extending in the direction of elongation of the chain block and bounded between the above portions and the supporting portions.
