    • A rock is excavated by the steps of forming at least one groove in the rock by a water jet, forcing a first single-bevel cutter into the rock while the cutter is moved along a line parallel to and spaced apart from the groove so that cracks formed by the cutter and reaching the groove are thereby formed mostly by tensile failure of the rock, further forcing the first cutter through the rock until a succeeding second single-bevel cutter moving along a path further from the groove than the first cutter is forced against the rock so that cracks starting from the second cutter and reaching the groove are thereby formed, and continuing this procedure similarly until all of several sequentially staggered and succeeding cutters act on the rock. The apparatus has an excavation head on which nozzles and cutters are so arranged that the above described method can be put into practice thereby.

    • A lubricant reservoir is positioned in each of the three arms of a three cone rotary rock bit to provide lubricant to the bearings located between the cone cutters and the bearing shafts upon which they rotate. A seal is positioned between the cone cutters and the bearing shafts to retain lubricant in the bearing area and to prevent borehole fluids and debris from entering the bearing area. A flexible diaphragm positioned in the lubricant reservoir divides the reservoir into a lubricant portion and a pressure equalizing portion. A vent passage extends from the pressure equalizing portion of the lubricant reservoir to an area on the exterior surface of the bit wherein the borehole fluid pressure on the bit is substantially the same as the borehole fluid pressure on the seal.

    • A drilling bit for drilling earthen material such as an oil well rotary cone drilling bit, which includes means for preventing foreign particles such as sand, rock cuttings, etc., from reaching the rotational bearings of the bit cones. This end result is principally achieved by means of a centrifugal slinger disc or wall which is positioned in external concentricity with the drill bit cone bearing, and operates to drive granular particles away from the bearings, thereby preventing such particles from reaching these bearing surfaces. The granular particles are driven by the slinger action through a series of apertures forming a channel running out to a peripheral region of the bit cones. A channel continuation is also provided for lubricating fluid, which may comprise ambient water or oil placed in chambers surrounding the bearings, this channel providing access for such lubricating fluid inwardly to the bit cone bearings. A disc-shaped wall member is provided opposite the slinger disc to minimize the escape of oil from the chambers when the bit is stationary. A ring member carrying a plurality of curved vanes, this ring member being externally concentric with the supporting shaft of the cone and located near the outer periphery of the bit cone may also be employed to prevent larger foreign particles, such as cuttings, from entering into the region of said slinger.

    • Lubricant is circulated from a lubricant reservoir to the bearings of a rotary rock bit and back to the lubricant reservoir by a lubricant circulation system that is operated by rotation of the cone cutter upon the bearing pin of the bit. A seal is positioned between the rolling cone cutter and the arm of the bit to maintain lubricant in the bearing area and to prevent fluid and materials in the borehole from entering the bearing area. A lubricant reservoir is located in the bit body. A first passage connects the lubricant reservoir with the bearing area to channel lubricant from the lubricant reservoir to the bearing area. A second passage extends from the bearing area to the lubricant reservoir to allow lubricant to be channeled back to the lubricant reservoir. A spiral screw connected to the cone cutter extends into a passage in the bearing pin and provides a pumping action as the cone cutter rotates to circulate lubricant from the lubricant reservoir through said first passage to the bearing area and from the bearing area through said second passage back to said lubricant reservoir.

    • Drill cuttings in the borehole are prevented from entering the area between the bearing pin and the cone cutter of a rotary rock bit by a cone mouth air screen. The cone cutter includes an internal cavity and a cone mouth positioned over the bearing pin. Bearings are located within the internal cavity between the bearing pin and the cone cutter. A passage extends through the bit body and the bearing pin for conducting a gaseous drilling fluid to the internal cavity for cooling the bearings. A screen means is positioned in the cone mouth between the cone cutter and the bearing pin for preventing solids in the borehole from entering the internal cavity and for allowing the circulating gaseous drilling fluid to pass from the internal cavity into the borehole.
