    • A rotary roller bit for drilling earth and rock formations, having a main body and three legs extending outwardly therefrom. Each of the legs carries a conical roller cutter with internal bearings and there is a seal around the periphery of the top of the roller cutter. The periphery of the roller cutter is spaced from the adjacent portion of the leg so as to provide a jet slot for the discharge of air. Adjacent the slot and radially inwardly is an air chamber which is formed between an annular surface of the leg and a seal ring. The air chamber is substantially greater in its dimension axially of the roller cutter and air is supplied to it under sufficient pressure to cause a jet of air to flow from the jet slot at a sufficient rate to prevent the entry of rock particles and dirt into the roller cutter.

    • A bit holder consisting of steel, said bit holder comprising a bore for accommodating the bit shaft and being welded to the cutting head of a cutting machine, characterized in that the bit holder consists of a part of heat-resistant steel of high strength and of a foot consisting of an unalloyed or low alloy steel of good weldability and being welded to said foot over the whole contacting area. In making the holder a blank corresponding to the part accommodating the bit shaft is over the whole contacting area welded to a blank corresponding to the foot to provide a composite blank which is subsequently forged in a forging die.

    • A wedge arrangement for removably affixing a work tool or work tool holder to a base member on mining, road working or earth moving machinery, and the like, and being particularly useful in the mining, road planing and earth digging areas. The arrangement is such that the removable member may be readily replaced and wear and tear on the base member greatly reduced to the extent that such base member will not be destroyed or otherwise rendered useless; such base member may be a part which is permanently secured to the basic machine or it may in fact be the machine itself or some integral part thereof. The base member is preferably provided with a slot of a size sufficient to receive both the removable member and a wedge element; such member and element may be placed within the slot from above thereof, lateral entry of the removable member and wedge element into the slot often being unnecessary. Means are provided to move the wedge element so as to effect a frictional engagement between the removable member and the base member to effect an interference fit in which there is no relative motion between these members and thus virtually no wear. (It is possible to reverse this arrangement and provide the removable member with the slot and the base member with a suitable male element which, along with the wedge element, will be received in the slot.) The removable member may be provided with a bit, road planing device or digging tooth, which working elements may in turn be removably affixed to and/or within the removable part.

    • A rotary percussion bit comprises a body having at its upper end a threaded pin adapted to mate with a length of dual conduit drill stem. A plurality of down flow passages for air or other drilling fluid are near the periphery of the body. Inwardly of the down flow passages is an upflow passage. Channels across the lower face of the body connect the down flow and upflow passages. Over the bottom face of the body are located interior boring elements. The face is preferably concave, comprising a plurality of annular steps. At the lower end of the body is disposed a ring on the flat bottom of which are located gage and near gage boring elements. The ring extends down below the outer periphery of the bottom face of the body of the bit. The ring is secured to the body by quick attachable and detachable means in the form of an epoxy cemented straight threaded rotary shouldered connection, the ring having a bevelled lip extending upwardly around the bit body. The outer peripheries of the lip and ring are protected by wear resistant material, which may be hard weld metal or flat ended tungsten carbide inserts. Preferably the boring elements of the body and ring are tungsten carbide inserts.

    • A roller cutter assembly adapted to be fixed to the cutter head of a tunneling machine is disclosed. The cutter assembly includes a cutter rotatably mounted on a shaft so that end portions of the shaft project from the cutter. Each of those projecting end portions has a pair of flat faces the planes of which intersect at an angle of 90*. A generally U-shaped saddle having projecting arm portions mounts the shaft so that the cutter is rotatable on the shaft. Each arm of the saddle has a pair of flat faces the planes of which intersect at an angle of 90 degrees and which engage the faces on a projecting end portion of the shaft. The engaged faces are clamped together by bolts, each of which exerts a clamping force having components normal to the engaged faces and each of which is more nearly horizontal than vertical with respect to the intended cutting plane. According to one aspect of this invention, the cutter is a gauge cutter and one projecting arm portion of the saddle may be removed from the remainder of the saddle to facilitate removal and replacement of the gauge cutter.
