    • A hair braider is provided and is configured to perform a three-bundle plait or braid and includes a body having a handle and a head portion at one end of the handle; a selectively actuatable drive source disposed within the body; and first and second rotatable rotors that are disposed within the head portion and are accessible through openings formed in the head portion. The first and second rotatable rotors are operatively coupled to the drive source through a plurality of gears such that the first and second rotors rotate in opposite directions when the drive source is actuated. The hair braider further includes a plurality of hair retaining members that are received within openings formed through the first and second rotatable rotors, wherein each hair retaining member has a bore formed therethrough for receiving one bundle of hair. In addition, a mechanism for transferring at a transfer location one hair retaining member from one rotor to the other rotor as the rotors rotate, wherein the initial arrangement of the hair retaining members within the openings. The rotation of the rotors in opposite directions and the successive transfer of one hair retaining member from one rotor to the other rotor results in a true, three-bundle braid being formed.

    • A bobbin drive mechanism is for a rotary braider of the type in which a circular array of outer strand supply bobbins and a circular array of inner strand supply bobbins are caused to rotate one array relative to the other. The outer strand supply bobbins are fixedly mounted on a first circular table of the braider, the inner strand supply bobbins are mounted for relative rotational movement about a circular track of the first table and strands from the outer strand supply bobbins are capable of being guided inwardly and outwardly of the track and the inner strand supply bobbins thereon to produce braiding. The bobbin drive mechanism includes a second circular table coaxially aligned with the first table and adapted to rotate relative thereto. A circular array of pairs of shafts corresponds to the array of inner strand supply bobbins and each is mounted for rotation on the second table. The shafts include a planetary gear fixedly mounted thereon in alignment with and engaging a circular gear on the first table to cause rotation of the shaft during relative rotation of the table. A crank is fixedly mounted on an end of each shaft to rotate therewith. A pair of radially extending dogs associated with each inner strand supply bobbin are mounted on the second table and aligned with a slotted fitting of the associated inner strand supply bobbin. Linkage between each dog and its respective crank causes inward and outward movement of the dog during rotation of the shaft. Each of the cranks of the pair of shafts is prepositioned to cause one of the dogs to be in driving engagement with the slotted fitting of the inner strand supply bobbin as the other of the dogs is displaced therefrom to allow the strand from the outer strand supply bobbin to freely pass therebetween.

    • A rotary braiding machine interweaves strands to form a braid for a work piece, such as a hydraulic hose or the like. A frame has a central axis about which strands of fiber are braided. Inner bobbin-carrier assemblies and outer bobbin-carrier assemblies are carried circumferentially on the frame. The inner bobbin-carrier assemblies are rotatably supported by the frame radially outwardly of the central axis, are separated by recesses, and each supports a strand supply bobbin. Each of the inner bobbin-carrier assemblies has an inner tensioning and control assembly to pay-out a first strand of one or more fibers from its bobbin and to position the first strand in substantially perpendicular relation to the central axis of the frame. The outer bobbin-carrier assemblies are rotatably supported by the frame radially outwardly of the central axis and of the inner array of strand supply bobbins. The outer bobbin-carrier assemblies likewise support strand supply bobbins and form a second circular array, each having an outer tensioning and control assembly to pay-out a second strand of one or more fibers from its bobbin and to manipulate that strand so that it synchronously moves into a corresponding recess in the frame of the machine so that the inner bobbin-carrier assemblies may be circumferentially rotated to pass over the second strand, and out of the corresponding recess so that the inner bobbin-carrier assemblies may be circumferentially rotated so as to pass under the second strand. For minimizing strand tension while achieving the optimum braid angle in the finished product, the outer strands pass through a position substantially perpendicular to the central axis of the machine at the braid point, while passing into and out of the recesses.
