摘要： An improved process for the solvent extraction of free oil from C.sub.8 to C.sub.24 olefin sulfonation products, which comprises steps for contacting an olefin sulfonation product containing free oil with an alkane-based extraction solvent and phase separating the resulting mixture into an extract phase enriched in free oil and a raffinate phase enriched in sulfonated matter. The invention is particularly directed to the use in such a process of an extraction solvent which comprises one or more C.sub.4 to C.sub.9 alkanes and between about 5 and 35 percent by weight of dimethyl ketone. Deoiled sulfonation products are known for utility as components of detergent formulations for industrial, household and personal care uses.

摘要： Aqueous solutions of alkali metal C.sub.8-22 .alpha.-olefin sulfonates of light color and of low sultone content are prepared rapidly and at moderate temperatures by:(a) reacting a C.sub.8-22 .alpha.-olefin with gaseous sulfur trioxide thereby forming a crude sulfonation product mixture containing C.sub.8-22 olefin sulfonic acids, with a content of sultones,(b) bleaching said crude sulfonation product mixture at 30.degree. C. to 80.degree. C. for 10 to 60 minutes with an aqueous alkaline bleaching solution at a pH of at least 8,(c) heating said diluted bleached sulfonation product mixture containing excess alkali to a temperature of from 140.degree. C. to 170.degree. C. until the sultone content of said sulfonation product mixture is less than 100 ppm, and(d) recovering said alkali metal C.sub.8-22 .alpha.-olefin sulfonates of light color and of low sultone content. A decrease in the sultone content from as much as 650,000 ppm to less than 50 ppm is possible by the method.

摘要： A high concentration aqueous solution of the salt of an alpha-sulfo fatty acid ester is produced by (a) neutralizing the sulfonated product of a fatty acid ester with an aqueous caustic alkali solution having a concentration of 15 through 50% by weight, in the presence of an alcohol having 1 to 4 carbon atoms in an amount of 5 through 20% by weight based on the weight of the sulfonated product, to form an acidic neutralized product having a pH of 2.5 through 4 and; then, (b) adding an aqueous caustic alkali solution having a concentration of 1 through 5% by weight to the acidic neutralized product to adjust the pH of the acidic neutralized product to 6 through 7. The aqueous solution of the salt of the alpha-sulfo fatty acid ester thus obtained includes only small amounts of the undesired alpha-sulfo fatty acid salt.

摘要： Alpha olefin sulfonates generally commercially made by reacting SO.sub.3 with alpha olefins followed by neutralization and saponification with base (typically sodium hydroxide), and subsequently bleaching, characteristically may contain by-product impurities which are non-sulfonate sulfur containing organic compounds. These impurities chiefly sultones, can be substantially completely eliminated by the process sequence of the present disclosure which involves heating and bleaching and pH adjustment under specified conditions. Surprisingly, such and similar organic sulfurous impurities are eliminated during such heating and do not reform under such bleaching and pH adjustment.
