    • A railway car having a lowered center of gravity is provided. The underframe of the railway car is preferably formed by extending a series of cross bearers between a pair of side sills and spacing them laterally between a pair of end sills. A center sill is then preferably disposed on top of the cross bearers and extended between the end sills along a center line of the railway car underframe. One or more floor stringers are preferably also included and disposed generally parallel to the center sill and extended between the end sills. In one embodiment, the one or more floor stringers may be disposed on stringer support spacer beams positioned on one or more of the cross bearers.

    • A support for a car body on a chassis, in particular on a truck of a rail vehicle. A support comprises a fluid-actuated piston-cylinder unit arranged between car body and chassis, and a rocker support arranged also between car body and chassis which comprises a first support part and a second support part which is arranged between the first support part and a part of the car. Each support part has a rolling surface via which it rests on another rolling surface, in which connection at least one rolling surface of the two rolling surfaces contacting each other is cylindrical and the contact between a pair of rolling surfaces is linear. The support part takes up little space. The distance between the car body and the chassis can be very small. This is achieved in that at least one of the two support parts is developed in annular shape; that the piston-cylinder unit is located within the at least one annular support part; and that the cylinder of the piston-cylinder unit is provided with an outer flange having a rolling surface against which the annular support part rests via a rolling surface, and the piston of the piston-cylinder unit rests on another part.

    • An improvement in dead lever lugs for mounting on cast metal bolsters for railway trucks is disclosed. The bolster has two side walls. The side walls have angled portions that meet in radii along the junctures of the angled portions. The dead lever lug has two arms joined by a bridge section. Each of the arms has a mounting surface that is shaped to mate with the shape of one of the angled surfaces of the bolster. The mounting surfaces of the dead lever lug arms are separated by a gap. When the dead lever lug is mounted on the bolster, the dead lever lug straddles the juncture of the angled portions of the side wall. One mounting surface of each arm is positioned against one of the angled portions of the side wall and the gap overlies the juncture of the two angled portions of the side wall. With the dead lever lug of the present invention, no flat raised mounting area is needed on the side wall of the bolster.

    • A multi-mode trailer suspension system for use on a highway and a railroad is provided. The suspension system has a frame and a sub-frame pivotally connected to the frame. At least one lower suspension arm is pivotally connected to one of either the frame or the sub-frame. The lower suspension arm supports an axle assembly. At least one suspension spring is arranged between the sub-frame and the lower suspension arm to provide damping. At least one bi-directional actuator interconnects the frame and the sub-frame for moving the sub-frame relative to the frame to a plurality of positions, namely a highway position, a rail position, and a transition position. Accordingly, the bi-directional actuator is used to raise and lower the trailer without using the suspension springs.
