    • A high rate carbon cathode is made by mixing a carbon powder having a sure area of about 1000 square meters/gram with polytetrafluoroethylene and a sufficient amount of water to form a coherent mixture. The mixture is applied to an electrically conductive screen; the cathode formed while wet to an intermediate thickness, the cathode vacuum dried at about 100 degrees C., and the cathode cold compressed to obtain a final electrode porosity of greater than 80 percent. The cathode can be used in a lithium primary cell using a solution of an inorganic lithium salt in sulfuryl chloride as the electrolyte.

    • A horizontally movable slide bears a two section, continuously extending horizontally inclined, steep and shallow sloped cam slot controlling the vertical rise and fall of a cam follower driven support fixture for supporting a ceramic green sheet in underlying contact with a stencil mask in an automatic MLC screening machine. An apertured positioning flag moves horizontally with the slide and past a vertical height digital position encoder assembly and a mask separate encoder assembly. The positioning encoder assembly provides an electrical signal for controlling an actuator mechanism causing slide movement, indicative of the desired final positioning height of the green sheet relative to the mask when the fixture is moving towards the mask. When the actuator mechanism drives the slide in the opposite direction, to lower the green sheet from the mask, the mask separate encoder assembly produces a signal, in response to common positioning flag movement in the opposite direction with the slide to effect a change in speed of the actuator mechanism. This provides slow initial separation of the green sheet from the mask and final removal of the fixture from screening height, at a much more rapid rate.

    • A protected easy-open metal end for containers is disclosed that contains a scoreline which defines on the central portion of the end a removable panel portion and a residual lip portion. A layer of synthetic resin hot melt material is deposited on one of the central panel surfaces opposite the scoreline, whereupon after the hot melt is solidified, the end is post heated to effect softening of the hot melt so that the metal end surface is wetted thereby. The resultant bond between the hot melt and the metal end is so great that severing of the removable panel from the end effects corresponding severing of the hot melt layer to provide protective hot melt layers on the edges of each of the panel and the residual lip portions. The hot melt layer may be applied to the same or the opposite central panel surface that contains the scoreline, or on both surfaces to provide two-side protection.
