    • There is disclosed instrumentation for use in connection with one or more tablet presses of various types, and in particular rotary tablet presses, for virtually any reasonable combination and number of such tablet presses. Tablet formation information, in particular compression and ejection force information, tablet capping information and force information related to the time of occurrence of punch withdrawal is provided and processed by such instrumentation. This information is selectively applied to converting means which renders the selected information in a convenient data form for processing. Selection of the information may be made for example based on the need or desire to monitor a particular tablet press, tablet press station and/or individual tablet die/punch set combination. The selected information is processed by data processing means to provide output signals, including tablet press control signals, relating for example to the average and standard deviation of a pre-established number of consecutive tabletting events and determination of the frequency and number of abnormal tablet formations. The instrumentation may be employed to determine tabletting characteristics of pharmaceutical tablet granulations. Provision is also made for determining and isolating tablets failing to meet pre-established criteria.

    • A web of photographic paper is provided with indicia in the form of parallel grooves which are impressed into the rear side of the web by a reciprocable or pivotable ram- or wheel-shaped tool having one or more projections in the form of teeth, ribs or rings. The grooves are deep enough to be detectable by a needle, elastically mounted blade or other mechanical scanning means which cooperates with a transducer serving to produce signals for actuation of a device which severs the web between neighboring prints or for actuation of an evaluating circuit which receives a signal upon detection of the last print forming part of a customer order. The grooves extend at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the web. The projections of the tool can be heated to insure the formation of lasting grooves even if the web is caused to pass through one or more liquid baths before it reaches the scanning station.

    • A material compacting construction comprising a compacting means, a first drive for the compacting means, a feeding means, and a second drive for the feeding means. Control means are provided for varying the operation of the feeding means in accordance with the load applied to the drive for the compacting means. The control means includes means for sensing the load and a meter connected to the sensing means. When the meter records a limiting position, indicating that the load has increased or decreased to a limiting value, an electrical circuit associated with the meter is operated. This circuit in turn operates adjusting means for the drive of the feeding means whereby the rate of material fed to the compacting means is adjusted. This adjustment is calculated to maintain the energy level and product quality at desired values.

    • An injection molding machine provided with a sensing device for sensing the instant mold becomes filled completely with a molten material. Such time of mold filling is sensed either through a sudden or steep increase in the oil pressure of a hydraulic cylinder which receives a ram connected to a screw plunger for forcing a molten plasticized material into the mold cavity or through a sudden increase in the pressure of the molten material in the vicinity of the injection gate. Such increase in oil pressure or melt pressure is sensed in the form of a time derivative or of a rate of change of injection or oil pressure with respect to time, viz, a differential dP/dT in which P stands for injection pressure or back oil pressure and T stands for the time of injection; the derivative is converted into a signal, which acts for triggering certain operating members of the machine for operating in response to the time of mold filling.
