    • An end-profiler for producing matching finger joints and the like in the ends of timbers and similar structural members, wherein a height-adjustable vise holds such a structural member at a first level for end-profiling by a special profiling cutter arrangement, following which the vice holds a second member, to be end-profiled to fit the first member at a second level offset from the first level by a predetermined amount, the predetermined amount normally equalling one-half spacing between successive convolutions in the profiling cutters; the special profiling cutters arrangement includes a carriage positioned to reciprocate across the end of a timber held in the vise for profiling, and a pair of elongated parallel-spaced counter rotating special ''''abrasive'''' profiling cutters having a plurality of zero-leadthreadlike contours with a shape in profile complementary to the finger joints to be produced, the direction of cutter rotation causing the cutters to cut into the sides of the work rather than the ends of the work, and the stroke of carriage reciprocation being pre-settable to cause each cutter to cut slightly more than halfway through the timber with the cuts merging at the center of thickness of the timber, thereby preventing splintering; a double-ended provision, together with a motor reversal provision, affords means for producing finger joint structure at one end and matching finger joint structure at the other end without resetting the adjustments.

    • A profiled, soft cushioned roller is provided with an outer profiled abrading surface that conforms to and rides on a contoured substrate surface during an abrading operation. A soft roller usually in the form of a soft foam layer or body allows the profiled abrading surface to extend to and laterally wrap itself along the contoured substrate surface when pushed against the latter with the force needed to abrade the contoured surface. Because the outer surface portion of the profiled, soft roller is able to distort and wrap across the contoured surface, the soft profiled portion need not have the exact contoured shape and dimensions of the contoured surface being abraded. The soft roller body may have portions with different hardness by using different materials or different densities of the same foam material. The abrading surface may be a separable piece having a one-way clutch connection to an interior driving portion of the roller, or it may be an abrasive grit or the like integrally bonded or integrally embedded in the outer circumferential portion of the roller.

    • A profile grinding machine has at least two tool holders which are fixed in a frame and on each of which is fixed a grinding tool, for machining workpieces transported past the profile grinding machine in a working plane. The tool holders can be arranged in various angular positions, and their tools complement each other to give the desired profile shape. The advantages of a uniform grinding operation can be achieved in spite of the use of a plurality of tools by arranging the tool holders at essentially the same height in the transporting direction and by the tools of two neighboring tool holders forming the desired profile shape by a complementarily toothed design of the mutually facing edges, one engaging in the other.

Abrasive flap brushes are arranged to finish the surfaces of the lumber and, at the same time, round off its longitudinally extending corners.

    • A powered coping and profile cutting and/or sanding apparatus is able to impart any shape to the surface of a body of material (17) at any angle, simple or compound, relative to the body of material. The apparatus comprises a reciprocating "frame"(36) encasing thin stacking metal sheets (42) which are adjustable in a forward/backward direction for allowing multiple shape setups. The sheets (42), which are oriented vertically, have saw teeth at their top sections (42a) and no teeth at their bottom sections (42b). Adhesive-backed sandpaper (78) is affixed to the bottom section (42b) after the shape is set. This allows a cutting phase and a sanding phase with the same profile. The entire reciprocating frame (36) pivots multidirectionally within two planes, and may be locked at any angle. The reciprocating frame (36) is movable in a forward/backward direction. The body of material (17) being cut is immovably clamped, and the frame (36) is moved into the body of material (17) for the cutting and/or sanding operation.
