    • A cutter blade (17) for a finger joint cutter head (10) which includes a cantilevered cutting tip attachment. A cantilever pocket (20) is formed in the fillet area of steel backing member (18) to receive and hold the inner end of a hard material cutting tip (19), such as tungsten carbide. Cantilever pocket (20) has tapered sides which diverge outwardly and a rounded vertex or pocket bottom. Cutter tips are elongated to extend well into cantilever pockets (20). Each cutter tip is attached within a pocket (20) and along the joint surface of steel backing members (18), using a sandwich braze, to form braze joints (21) and (22).

    • A cutting head for forming finger joints in the ends of successively presented boards moved into engagement therewith, is slidably mounted for vertical reciprocation between two preselected cutting positions. The movement is imparted by a pressure fluid actuator which is cyclically actuated to urge the cutting head alternately into the preselected positions after each cutting operation. The apparatus facilitates shaping consecutive work pieces respectively into left and right hand mating finger joints with a single cutting head, requiring no manual effort or set-up between pieces.

    • A board is moved along a straight path forming a chord through the circular orbit of a milling head. The relative speeds of the orbiting head and the moving plank are varied with respect to each other such that the vector of the orbiting speed of the head parallel to the plank displacement direction, i.e., the velocity component in this direction is always equal to the velocity of the plank while this head is in contact with a plank end. Thus, splines are cut of equal length and depth. The head can simultaneously cut splines in the trailing end of a leading workpiece and the leading end of a trailing workpiece, and then on the return swing cut splines in the trailing end of the trailing workpiece and in the leading end of the following workpiece. Several such heads may be mounted on a single rotatable carrier. After cutting of the splines the planks are coated on their ends with adhesive and pushed together axially so as to splice them together.
