    • A wide endless-loop chain-link drilling mud separation belt formed of a plurality of laterally adjacent jointed links hinged together by transverse rods is pre-stretched prior to its installation and use on a drilling mud separation unit to prevent subsequent elongation, distortion, misalignment, chain tooth jumping, and side loading. The chain-link belt is installed on and driven in a continuous loop around a pair of parallel spaced cylindrical rollers adjustably mounted transversely in a rectangular frame of a hydraulic tensioning machine. The drive roller has a plurality of axially spaced circumferential rows of radially extending teeth that engage the openings in the links and the other roller has a smooth circumference. The drive roller and rear roller are mounted in inner front and rear tensioning frame assemblies, respectively, that are connected by hydraulic cylinders which extend and retract to move the rollers relative to one another and adjustably apply and maintain tension force in the moving chain-link belt as it is driven in a continuous loop over a period of time sufficient to achieve the desired linear expansion. In a preferred embodiment, the cylindrical rollers are formed of a metallic drum having a thick outer elastomeric layer and the teeth of the drive roller are machined into the surface of the elastomeric material to prevent metal-to-metal contact and reduce heat, wear, and friction.

    • A rolling mill for making endless bands, preferably by cold working precipitation hardenable stainless steel, includes a stationary central work roller and a pair of moveable work rollers, each carried by a corresponding carriage. The movable work rollers are backed by intermediate and drive rollers so as to be stiff in response to bending forces. The drive rollers provide rotary motion to all rollers. By elastically distorting a preform and then rolling it in the peripheral direction, the band is cold worked to a desired thickness. The preform may be obtained by parting an annular ring from tubular stock. Subsequent precipitation hardening of the cold worked band produces a stainless steel band having enhanced strength and endurance, and which is free of welds and similar discontinuities while exhibiting stress relieved edges rather than stress concentrated edges.

    • The specification discloses apparatus and a process for forming the female or bell end of welded wire reinforcing cages, particularly cages of the type used to reinforce concrete pipe. A cylindrical wire cage assembly is automatically centered and positioned within the apparatus and the bell end is formed by elongating one or more of the circumferential wires at one end of the cage. A force is applied between two points on the circumferential wires to simultaneously expand the wires and rotate the cage. A heat source is applied to a localized zone between the two points on the wire. The heat source and wire are moved relative to each other such that the heat zone moves along the wire as the force is applied. The wire is stretched under the force being applied to thereby continuously reduce the diameter of the wire and elongate the wire as it is moved relative to the heat source.
