摘要： A solution applying method in which a continuously conveyed web is applied with a coating solution by a solution injector. The solution injector includes a lip with a lower end portion thereof having an angle of 85.degree. or less relative to a surface of the injector. A coating solution flows along the lip of the solution injector to form a bead between the lip and the web. The solution applying conditions and pressures before and after the bead is formed between the web and the lip are controlled before the coating solution is applied to the web such that a lower end portion of the bead coincides with the lower end portion of the lip. The solution applying device may have a lower end portion of the lip with an angle of not more than 89.degree.. A portion of the lip may extend parallel to a roller conveying the web and has a length of 0.1-10 mm. Even when a solution having good wettability is used as a coating solution, foreign matter is prevented from adhering to the lip due to drying, hardening and gelation of the coating solution to thereby prevent streaking for a relatively long duration.

摘要： In the manufacture of photographic elements, such as photographic film or paper, apparatus for coating the support by forming a free-falling vertical curtain of liquid photographic coating composition in such manner that the curtain is stable and has a uniform flow rate across its width and directing the support so that the free-falling curtain impinges thereon, while maintaining a controlled relation between the flow rate and the speed at which the support is moved, to form a thin layer of the coating composition on the face of the support. Such apparatus includes means for advancing the support at the desired speed and a hopper for the coating composition which is provided with a downwardly inclined slide surface down which the coating composition flows by gravity, the slide surface terminating in a lip spaced vertically above the moving support from which the coating composition flows as a free-falling curtain.

摘要： An improved extrusion-slide coating hopper for multi-layer coating of a substrate is described. The improved extrusion-slide coating hopper includes an upturned generally horizontally directed lip, which lip extends at an obtuse angle from an inclined slide surface and toward the substrate to be coated. A coating composition may be made to flow down the inclined slide and then upon the generally horizontally directed lip before being introduced on top of an extruded bridge of coating composition. The bridge of coating composition spans a generally horizontal gap between the hopper and the upwardly moving substrate. The apparatus of the invention improves upon coating apparatus of the prior art by providing, when coating, increased bridge stability and minimization of the deleterious effects of particles that lodge at an edge of the hopper.
